Inscribed with the year 1863 and the words "A. Lincoln, Pres. USA," the Lincoln canes were a gift from President Lincoln's administration to the pueblo governors to mark their land grant rights. The Pueblo Indians use the canes as a symbol of authority for the office of governor.
