Abstract:
14 black and white photographs, some of which are duplicates, of Mearns and bird specimens he collected. None are include identifications except two photographs labeled “young Balaeniceps”. Location and date are unknown, but probably during the Smithsonian African Expedition from 1908-1910.

Summary:
Edgar A. Mearns, an ornithologist, research associate, and honorary associate in zoology, with the United States National Museum, now known as the National Museum of Natural History, was one of three naturalists from the National Museum chosen go on the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition with Theodore Roosevelt to Africa in 1909. In this pose Mearns is facing towards the left.

Abstract:
The field book documents Edgar A. Mearns' field work in California, 1894. Entries are dated and headed location. Pages are numbered. Entries discuss travel details, locations (including names of ranches visited), descriptions of terrain, vegetation, flora and fauna observed. This includes lists of fauna observed with information about population abundance, sometimes on habitat. There descriptions can be extensive. Abstract:
The field book documents Edgar A. Mearns' field work in Florida, 1901. There is an index with pages in the front indicating mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, plants, itinerary, nest and eggs, and list of periodicals. The specimen lists vary in structure and content. Some are headed with location and date, and include field number, type (scientific name), age, sex, measurements (various), appearance, colors, descriptions resulting from dissection. Some descriptions are extensive. Others are succinct lists with notes relating to appearance, preparation, or habitat. First specimens are listed by number, then entered by type, corresponding to index. Locations include town, geographic location, and county. Abstract:
The field book documents Edgar A. Mearns' field work in Philippines, 1903 - 1908. Includes a few postcards and photographs. Information includes mammal data for Dr. Lyon. Entries are organized by more than one method, some by field number, others by date. Pages are numbered. There is an overview description of collecting, followed by field number, type, preparation, and USNM catalog number; and memorabilia (music program). Notebook entries are headed by date, and location, followed by field number, type, preparation, sex, age and altitude. Descriptions vary in detail, some include measurements, appearance, collecting method, habitat. Other list is organized by field number.
