This accession consists of records created and maintained by Donald S. Lopez, Deputy Director, documenting the administration of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) and outreach performed by Lopez on behalf of NASM. Lopez held various positions at the National Air and Space Museum beginning in 1972 and became Deputy Director in 1983. Lopez retired in 1990, but came back to the position of Deputy Director in 1996, a position which he held until his death in 2008. In between stints as Deputy Director, Lopez continued to be closely involved in the activities of the Office of the Director. Topics documented in this collection include facilities, special events, strategic planning, exhibitions (including various iterations of proposed Enola Gay exhibitions), budget, collection management, policies, visitors, public relations, and lectures and presentations given by Lopez. The position of Deputy Director was created in 1971 when Director Michael Collins appointed Melvin B. Zisfein to the office. Zisfein, who was also Acting Director in 1978, served until 1981 when he left the Museum. Walter J. Boyne was named Deputy Director in 1981 and held the office, along with that of Acting Director, until 1983, when he became Director. In 1983 Boyne chose Donald S. Lopez to be Deputy Director for Curatorial Sciences. In 1984 the title was shortened to Deputy Director

These records provide documentation on the development of NASM after the huge success of its 1976 opening. The emphasis of the Museum's administration turned to revitalization of research efforts, professionalization of the staff, initiation of new projects and new exhibitions, an expanded program of publications, and plans to build both a new restaurant and an extension of the Museum at Dulles Airport
