This accession consists of records documenting the activities of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) during the tenure of Director Marc Pachter (2000-2007), but also
includes records from the tenures of Directors Charles Nagel (1964-1969), Marvin S. Sadik (1969-1981), and Alan Maxwell Fern (1982-2000). Topics covered include cultural affairs,

other Smithsonian Institution (SI) bureaus, professional associations, and museums. A small portion of the records predate the formation of NPG. Materials include correspondence;
memoranda; budget records; grant proposals; color photographs and negatives; black-and-white photographs and negatives; brochures; reports; resumes; VHS tapes; and clippings.

The Freer Gallery of Art Central Files are comprised mostly of the documentation of routine office procedures. Included in the daily routine were: filling orders for
facsimiles of photographs, responding to reference requests seeking information about art and artifacts falling under the domain of the Freer's expertise, the Freer granting
permission to publish to those wanting to publish images purchased from the Freer, and correspondence regarding Freer publishing.
All folders in the Central Files contain such routine documentation. When folders contain items above and beyond the general scope of the materials, a note is made. Folders
often contain the work of a wide variety of Freer staff. When a director or curator is strongly represented in the folder, a note is made. Indication of a few of the directors
or curators does not negate the existence of other Freer personnel.
Approximate date spans are indicated for each folder. A final note is made about folders containing preservation concerns (i.e., folded papers, photographs, telegrams,
etc.). The folders are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically.
This accession consists of the records of Cynthia Adams Hoover (CAH), Curator Emeritus at the National Museum of American History (NMAH), and document her curatorial
activities, professional interests, and publications over the years as Assistant Curator of Musical Instruments, 1961-1963; Associate Curator, 1964-1974; and Curator, 1975-2004.
During her tenure Hoover was curator in the Section of Music Instruments, which became a division in 1966 and was renamed the Division of Musical History in 1987. In 1995,
NMAH reorganized and the Division of Musical History became part of the Division of Cultural History, which was renamed the Division of Music, Sports, and Entertainment in
2004. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, and notes; meeting agendas and minutes; budget summaries; fundraising, awards, and grant information; biographical information;
reports; workshop information; professional activities files pertaining to organizations in which Hoover was a founding member, such as the Society for American Music (formerly
the Sonneck Society) and the American Musical Instrument Society; collection surveys; acquisition information; lecture papers; research and exhibition proposals; special event
schedules and news releases; music history publications; audio cassettes; phonograph records; black-and-white photographs; color photographs; floor plans; brochures; and VHS
tapes.
