Scope and Contents:
Neighborhood Change is a broad-based initiative that looks at change in urban neighborhoods and communities from the perspective of community residents and stakeholders. The Neighborhood Change project investigates, documents, and presents research on how residents engage with stake holders and decision makers around changes in their immediate urban environment. Community-based documentation and research efforts for the project include oral history interviewing and community survey and mapping projects. An important part of the work is to build networks to share perspectives and discourse about historical and cultural dynamics that are seen and felt at the local level. Museum research into issue and themes of change that resonate within urban communities seeks to encourage and facilitate residents in urban neighborhoods to make links and connections between their communities and other urban centers.
The collection thus far include images documenting the built envirnoment in Southeast, Washington, D.C., and interviews with community residents.

Summary:
The Lee Harris papers, which dates from circa 1884 to 2001 and measures 1.43 linear feet, documents the activities of Chester Lee Harris and his extended family. The papers are comprised of certificates, diplomas, newspaper clippings, memorabilia, books, and photographs.
Scope and Contents note:
This collection documents the activities in the personal life of Chester Lee Harris and his family between 1884 and 2001. The majority of materials contained in this collection are family and travel snapshots. The series of biographical documents and books outline major events in his life, as well as his service in the military and his community.
Arrangement note:
The papers are organized into five series. Folders within series I to IV are arranged alphabetically, while the photographic series is arranged roughly in chronological order. Documents within the folders are organized chronologically.

Subseries 5.1: Lee Harris

Biographical/Historical note:
Chester Lee Harris was born in 1940, spending his early years at Hackensack, New Jersey with his parents, Chester and Margaret Harris. His sister Renee Harris was born three years later, after which the family moved to Manhattan, New York. Lee's mother was 16 years old when he was born – documentation on his father, however, is scarce. Margaret later divorced Chester and became married to William Beasley, who died in 1977. Both Lee and Renee graduated Edward W. Stitt Junior high school in New York.

In the early 1960s, Lee was enlisted in the 369th Infantry of the New York Army National Guard, participating in training at Fort Dix and Fort Drum. After his discharge, Lee married Claudette Nourse in 1969, moving into an apartment in the Bronx. He worked as a New York City Transit bus operator until 1994. Their first house was acquired after retirement in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The couple remains active in the community into later years of their life. At the age of fifty, Claudette graduated Bronx Community College of the City University of New York with an Associate's degree in Applied Science. Lee was fifty-nine and Claudette sixty-three when they volunteered at the Citizen's Academy of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The two-month program aimed to foster public understanding on the incentives behind police work, in order to correct common misunderstandings. The following year Lee again applied to be a police department volunteer, this time for the Programs for Accessible Living's Parking Patrol Program (P.A.L.). There is no indication of whether he was accepted into this program or not.

Gatherings with his extended family continued after marriage, particularly at Christmas. His grandmother, Henrietta Cephas Brown ("Nana") makes a consistent appearance in family photographs since Lee's birth, indicating their close correspondence. He also made trips with his extended family to locales such as Cape Cod, New Hampshire, and New York City.
Provenance:
The Lee Harris papers were donated to the Anacostia Community Museum in August 2003 by Mr. Chester Lee Harris.

Summary:
The collection, dated circa 1940s and measuring .42 linear feet, documents the lives and activities of the residents of the Frederick Douglass Dwellings. The collection is comprised of black-and-white photographs.
Biographical/Historical note:
Built as temporary housing for World War II workers, the Frederick Douglass Dwellings were located on land previously owned by Tobias Henson, a former slave, who, after purchasing his freedom and that of his family, purchased and developed a 24-acre tract called The Ridge. Henson added to his landholdings and by the 1870s his family was the principal landholder in the black community of Stantontown; they remained on the land until the 1940s, when the federal government condemned the community to build the Frederick Douglass Dwellings. Deemed uninhabitable in 1998 and left vacant, the Frederick Douglass Dwellings were demolished in 2000 to make way for a new mixed-income community.

The Bruce Mondschain Photographs are a collection of 5 born digital photographs and corresponding photographic prints of Pete Seeger taken at his home in Beacon, NY, on November 3, 2005. Each photograph (prints and digital files) has a sepia and a black-and-white toned version as prepared by the photographer. The shots include close-up portraits of Seeger, and close-up shots of his hands playing his banjo.

Biographical / Historical:
Bruce Mondschain has been an active photographer in the Chicago area for over 30 years. His work focuses on portraiture and fine arts figure study.

In the fall of 2005, Mondschain was invited to photograph folk singer Pete Seeger at his home in Beacon, NY after writing him a fan letter. Mondschain and his wife Ellen donated five of the photographs to the Center of Folklife and Cultural Heritage in 2008.

Summary:
This collection includes one photographic album containing 269 silver gelatin black and white prints (12 x 16 cm.) and dates from 1936-1941. The photographs were taken in northern Ethiopia, and possibly Somalia. The images highlight peoples including the Danakil and Afar, dress, adornments, coiffures, churches, and historical residence, among other subjects.
Scope and Contents:
This collection includes one photographic album containing 269 silver gelatin black and white prints (12 x 16 cm.) and dates from 1936-1941. The photographs were taken in northern Ethiopia (Afar region) and possibly Somalia, and may have been produced by Italian military members during the occupation and war with Ethiopia. The images largely depict groups and portraits of African peoples, including the Danakil and Afar, scenic views, soldiers, vernacular architecture, churches, and towns. Many photographs depict animals, including lions, camels, warthogs, wildebeest, porcupines, hyenas, baboons, cheetahs, snakes, and ostriches. Of particular note are photos of an Ethiopian priest with a cross, an Ethiopian horseman with a shield, and clergy in full ceremonial attire.

Historical note:
Unknown photographer. The album was likely compiled by Italian military officers around the beginning of World War II. At the time, Italy had colonies in Libya and Italian East Africa (now Libya). The cover of the album reads: "FONDAZIONE DELL IX IMPERO ANNO XIV MAGGIO", which translates to "Foundation of the Ninth Empire year 14 May"

Summary:
Album is comprised of photographs taken in and around Patiko, a settlement of the Acholi peoples (also known as Gan) in Uganda, and among the Teso peoples of Uganda. The images depict architectural features, general appearance of both Acholi and Teso, and in some instances activities and rituals. Photographer unknown.
Scope and Contents:
The album is comprised of photographs taken in and around Patiko, a settlement of the Acholi peoples (also known as Gan) in Uganda, and among the Teso peoples of Uganda, including at Lake Nagero and in the Guru Guru Hills. The images depict architectural features, the general appearance of both Acholi and Teso, and in some instances rituals and activities, including digging for water, watering cattle, threshing grain, mending a hoe, hunting and dancing. Additionally, there are several images of individuals wearing ornaments including brass rings, beaded headdresses and metal armbands.

The album was compiled by Major D.C. Robins, who served in British East Africa during the 1920s and 1930s.

Biographical Information:
Editor, lexicographer, author, and lecturer Everett Edward Thompson was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in1876. He received an A.B. degree from Amherst College in 1899. From 1901-1905 Thompson fufilled an appointment to a government teaching position in the Philippines. In 1905 he traveled from Manila to Singapore, and then to Burma, India, Ceylon, Java, the Straits Settlements, and Japan. From 1905 to 1909 he was part of the editorial staff of the G&C Merriam Company, publisher of the Webster-Merriam dictionaries, Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1907 he married Emily Lecretia Bettes and two years later in 1909 received an M.A. from Amherst College where he wrote a thesis on, "The Spanish Element in the English Language." From 1910-1920 Thomspon served as editor of foreign language textbooks, American Book Company, New York City. In 1920 he received honorary doctor of letters (Litt. D) from Syracuse University. That same year Thompson rejoined the Webster dictionary editorial staff of G&C Merriam Company, Springfield, Massachusetts where he remained until 1949. Everett Edward Thompson died 1962 March 24 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
