This series consists of material reflecting Gazin's longstanding involvement with the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) as charter member, 1940; fellow; Incorporator
(with the American Geological Institute), 1947-1948; President, 1949; and Chairman, Nominating Committee, 1967. He also served as SVP representative at the National Research
Council, 1948-1951, 1957-1960. Gazin played a principal role in the lengthy effort by the SVP to define and correlate, by the incidence of vertebrate fossils, the geologic
formations of the North American continental Tertiary. He chaired the Eocene Subcommittee; served on the Cenozoic Committee; and submitted glossary articles, defining formations,
to various subcommittees. Materials in this series include correspondence; glossary articles by Gazin and others; charts indicating formation correlations; drafts of subcommittee
reports; SVP News Bulletins, with Gazin's submissions to them concerning Smithsonian Division of Vertebrate Paleontology activities; and circulars.
