Scope and Contents:
Archival materials relating to Ryan's career as an athlete, a sports coach at Yale, an inventor, and an author. Includes photographs, the patent for Ryan's electro-mechanical football game, scrapbooks of newsclippings, Ryan's instructional books on sports, brochures, reprints of articles and other printed materials relating to Ryan's instructional films. Also included are instructional sports films Ryan created and marketed.

Divided into 2 series: Series 1: Papers, photographs and printed materials; Series 2: Audiovisual materials.
Biographical / Historical:
Coach at Yale University, creator of sports training films and author of sports training books. He developed a unique bank/school community relations program wherein banks would donate Ryan's sports training films to local schools in exchange for publicity.

Donated to the Archives Center in 2004 by Neil Ryan (Frank Ryan's son) and Fran Ryan.

Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of records maintained by Ellen Roney Hughes, who served on the steering committee of the Smithsonian Forum on Material Culture. The records document the Tenth Yale-Smithsonian Seminar on Material Culture and the essays on material aspects of sports presented at the event, which took place at the National Museum of American History. Some of the essays were used in a post-seminar publication, The Material Culture of Sport, edited by Hughes. Materials include correspondence, a program guide, participant lists, cassette recordings of the seminar, and essays. Some materials are in electronic format.

Scope and Contents:
Collection consists of newsclippings, photographs, event programs, correspondence, and a poster documenting the development of amateur boxing in the United States.
Biographical / Historical:
Benjamin Levine was born in New York City on November 3, 1888. He was of Jewish origin, his ancestors coming from Germany and Lithuania. In 1902, at the age of 13 he went to work for James E. Sullivan, President of the Metropolitan Amateur Athletic Union in New York. Beginning in 1911, he was a participant in and a witness to the development of amateur sports competition handling and promoting boxers. He staged the first Golden Gloves in 1927 and for many years thereafter. He was the assistant manager of the U.S. boxing teams at the 1924 and 1928 Olympic games. He was an international jurist in boxing at the 1932 Olympics. He worked as an official for the Amateur Athletic Union until he retired in 1963 and served as a consultant until his death in 1978.
