Personal papers of Alexander Van Valen documenting his participation in the California Gold Rush, 1849-1850.
Scope and Contents:
The collection consists mostly of the personal papers of Alexander Van Valen during his journey and subsequent stay in San Francisco, California, to participate in the Gold Rush,1849-1850. Of particular interest are the founding documents of the mining company, his 85 page journal, and his many letters, mostly to and from his wife Susan. Also included are portraits and daguerreotypes of his family. This collection is especially valuable to researchers who are interested in the California Gold Rush, nineteenth century maritime travel, business history, and migration.

Biographical / Historical:
Alexander Van Valen was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, on June 25, 1819. He married Susan Maria Talmage, and the couple had twin daughters, Catharine Eliza and Sarah Maria, born June 2, 1845. Van Valen served as treasurer of the California Gold Mining Company, one of many companies formed to participate in the 1849 California Gold Rush. Funded by two wealthy New York merchants, Henry A. Kerr and B. S. Clark, the company consisted of Van Valen and four men other men. Van Valen and his business partners agreed to spend two summers in California and pay Kerr and Clark one quarter of any profits made. Van Valen sailed aboard the San Francisco-bound Hersilia on January 22, 1849. Once in California, he and his company decided to try to strike it rich, first along the Mokelumne River and then up the San Joaquin River to Stockton. The trip proved unsuccessful, and Van Valen returned to New York less than two years later. He died on November 24, 1869.

Summary:
The collection documents Marks's years as a harpist on the Midwestern minstrel circuit. It includes sheet music and song books, theater programs, posters announcing minstrel shows, newspaper articles and advertisements.
Scope and Contents:
The collection contains the personal and professional papers of musician Peter Marks dating primarily from the mid to late nineteenth century. These materials provide valuable insight into life before and after the Civil War mainly through correspondence and other primary sources documenting domestic activities. The materials also provide invaluable insight into how a musician was able to make a living teaching music and performing in classical music concerts, as well as, with minstrel troupes.

Minstrelsy, created in the early 1800s was a comedic form of entertainment using song, dance, skit, musical performances and other variety acts as part of the program. Shows would often change on a weekly basis and troupes would travel around the country performing their own unique talents. Before the Civil War minstrelsy was most often performed by a white person like Peter Marks in black face and tended to use characters that lampooned African Americans as stupid, lazy, clumsy, and superstitious. After the Civil War, however, minstrels were occasionally performed by African Americans, who were usually a part of a publicity stunt. Several advertisements in this collection include images of minstrels in blackface, as well as, playbills and programs. Peter Marks was during his time one of the most well known musicians to come out of the minstrelsy circuit working alongside many other big name performers.

Biographical / Historical:
Peter Matthew Marks was said to have been one of the premier traveling minstrel musicians in America during the Civil War. Marks was born February 21, 1843 to parents William Augustus Marks and Anne Mooney (Marks) in Ireland and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. By the time he was twenty he was a skilled musician in piano, harp, and guitar. Marks performed with various minstrel troupes in and around Cincinnati, Ohio. During the war, he served as a member of the Ohio militia for one month before leaving to continue his musical career. Marks met and married Mary "Emma" McKitrick. Mary "Emma" McKitrick was born October 29, 1841 in Hamilton Butler, Ohio to parents Daniel Mckitrick and Ruth Burlingame. Emma also had an aunt, Emily Burlingame and an uncle, Nathan Burlingame on her mother's side whom she communicated regularly with. Peter and Emma settled in Cincinnati and raised two sons Eugene (1871-?) and Ralph (1875-1950) Marks. While in Cincinnati, Marks performed the minstrelsy circuit working alongside many big name celebrities. He is associated with at least eight different minstrel troupes, including Carncross and Dixey's Minstrels, Burgess, Pendergast, Hughes, Donniker and La Rue's Minstrels, and Monitor Campbell's Minstrels. While his primary career was performing with troupes he also gave solo performances and provided private lessons. Peter Marks ultimately left the minstrel circuit and went on to become a professor at the Cincinnati College of music. He died in 1883.

Biographical / Historical:
Elmer Gates (1859-1923) was an experimental psychologist and inventor active at the turn of the twentieth century. Having worked independently from a personal laboratory, Gates remains a largely obscure figure in the history of science. In his day, however, Gates was known for his original ideas linked to experimental psychology, as well as his numerous and eclectic inventions for which he received more than forty patents. A sampling of Gates's inventions and innovations include a foam fire-extinguisher, an improved electric iron, methods for magnetic separation, and educational toys. In the field of psychology, Gates promoted a concept that he termed psychurgy, or the "art of more efficiently using the mind."1

Elmer Gates was born near Dayton, Ohio, in 1859, to Jacob and Phebe Gates. At an early age, Elmer displayed a marked curiosity for the sciences. While in school, he was also taught by private tutors and his parents (his father was a teacher). By the late 1870s, Elmer had begun to develop ideas about experimental psychology. He believed that scientific experiments should be applied to the processes of the mind. The purpose of "psychurgy" would be to use the mind more effectively and efficiently. By training the mind through intense introspection and concentration and by attempting to observe corresponding physiological phenomena in the brain, Gates sought to demonstrate that the mind is in effect the body, and vice-versa. The ultimate aim—philosophical and moral—was to harness the mind's potential in order to advance new ideas and to improve emotional well-being and personal character.

The collection documents the business activities of the Sandford Card Company primarily in the early part of the century. It includes product designs and samples; advertising and marketing materials, as well as, correspondence and financial papers. In addition, there are the papers of Mary Elizabeth Sandford, founder of the company, and her immediate family. These materials consist primarily of diaries, photographs, correspondence, family histories and genealogies. The collection is arranged into four series. Series one documents the business activities of the Sandford Card Company. Series two contains the personal papers of Mary Elizabeth Sandford, her husband Frank Sherman Sandford and their children. Series three is the personal papers of Mary Elizabeth Sandford's parents and siblings. Series four is the personal papers of extended family members mostly by marriage.

Mary Elizabeth Kennedy Sandford founded the Sandford Card Company in Dansville, New York in 1907. The Sandford Card Company was intended to provide consumers with a means to send messages to family and friends. These messages contained well thought out verses and images on products other than the typical postcards that were available during this time period. Initially, Mary Elizabeth created four verses with images and had five thousand of each printed by the F. A. Owen Publishing Company. The four samples were sent to two hundred bookstores and drugstores. Sales were later made with distributors and agents in various cities throughout the country. In addition, the company also sold cards to fraternal organizations using their symbols or mottos in the design. Eventually, fraternal organizations became a big part of the company's customer base expanding to more than fifty groups.

The company grew as a mail order business. All card shipments were made directly from Dansville, New York to forty eight states and countries including Canada, Alaska, Cuba, Japan, Guam, Philippines, Hawaii, Panama, and Netherlands, West Indies, England and Scotland. Although the Sandford Card Company started as a greeting card business it eventually offered place cards, calling cards, calendars, program folders, napkins, banquet supplies, gifts and souvenirs to its product line. All printing work was contracted out to lithographic businesses in New York, Boston and Cincinnati. With the death of Mary Elizabeth Sandford and her husband Frank Sherman Sandford the company continued to be operated under the guidance of their daughter Ruth Louise Sandford. In 1948, Ruth Sandford hired John G. Holden as business manager. In 1965, the company moved from Dansville to Baldwinsville, New York under the management of the third generation of the founding family. It continued to operate as a family business until 19?? when it was sold to John G. Holden. The company was later purchased by Rodney Pease the grandson of Mary Elizabeth Sandford's sister Lillian Frances Pease. Pease eventually changed the name of the company and took it in a different direction.

Collection documents the life of Gilbert L. Friedlein, semi-professional baseball player and grain elevator operator, and his son Gilbert Friedlein, Jr. It includes photographs, a baseball contract, and correspondence.
Scope and Contents:
This collection is comprised of photographs, personal papers, and newspaper clippings about Gilbert L. Friedlein and his family. Topics include his membership on the Drake semi-professional baseball team, his employment with Farmers Elevator Company in Lewistown, Montana, and his son's membership in the University of California band. Highlights include several photographs of the grain elevator after its destruction by fire, a 1908 baseball contract, and a letter written from Freidlein, Jr. to his parents.

Biographical / Historical:
Gilbert L. Friedlein was born February 2, 1884, in Osterdock, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Harriet Friedlein. He received his education in Guttenberg, Iowa, and married Tressa Kathryn Akers from Charleston, West Virginia, on June 17, 1914. He was a pitcher for the semi-professional baseball team from Drake, North Dakota, before retiring from the sport in 1913 and working fulltime for Farmers Elevator Company. He resided in the area of Lewistown, Montana, for fifty-three years and served as a member of the City Council and the Elks Lodge before his death on May 1, 1961.

Friedlein's son, Gilbert Friedlein, Jr., was born on July 12, 1921. He attended the University of California-Berkeley, where he was a member of the university band. Friedlein, Jr. wed LeVita (Pat) Bernstein of San Jose, California. He was employed with the San Francisco Port of Embarkation and worked in the personnel department of the wage administration section in Oakland. Friedlein, Jr. died November 18, 1958.

Herder and Son, founded 1871 by Herman's son Leopold, the elder of two sons; Herder-Fine Cutlery, founded by younger son, Charles, 830 Arch Street; and Herder's Cutlery, Inc.
Separated Materials:
Artifacts related to this collection include ice skates, steel punches, stamps, grinders, scissors, shears, store signs, a grinder's stool, claim tags, honing stones, and razor blades. See accession 1983.0406.

Stocks and Bonds contains business records and advertisements generated by stock brokers, bankers, and traders who regularly deal with the US stock market.

Materials include a sampling of blank stock certificates, estimated stock quotes for traders, as well as guides to banking companies and artistic depictions of notable bankers and stock brokers. Additional material includes publications intending to educate others about the stock market, trading, and effective investments.

No extensive runs or complete records exist for any single company, however, Turner, Manuel and Company as well as the New York Stock Market are significantly represented or discussed. The Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Dentistry forms part of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Subseries 1.1: Subject Categories. The Subject Categories subseries is divided into 470 subject categories based on those created by Mr. Warshaw. Scope and Contents:
This collection includes dentists, dentifrices, tooth brushes, toothache remedies, pamphlets, news clippings, import-export documents, patents, trademarks and dental schools. This collection dates from 1731 to 1960, however, most materials are in the mid to late 19th century.

Box one, folders one thru 16 contains advertising cards for dentists and dental associations. Dental Schools are listed in folder numbered 17.

In folder number 18 are contained publications of various dental procedures and dental associations and organizations.

Folders 1 thru 11 in box number 2 are listed dentifrices and tooth brush manufacturers most of which are listed by trade names.

Folders 12 thru 19 are listed manufacturers of dental supplies targeted for use of the dentists in their practice, Tooth ache remedies are contained in folder number 20.

Box number 3 contains pamphlets, periodical s, catalogues and price lists in folders number one thru 10. Folders 1 thru 15 contains miscellaneous materials pertaining to dental and dentists.

Box 4 contains import-export documents, trademark and patents . Note: The terms plugging and filling are used interchangeably.

Warshaw continued to accumulate similar material until his death, which was donated in 1971 by his widow, Augusta. For a period after acquisition, related materials from other sources (of mixed provenance) were added to the collection so there may be content produced or published after Warshaw's death in 1969. This practice has since ceased.

A New York bookseller, Warshaw assembled this collection over nearly fifty years. Scope and Contents:
This material consists of advertising cards, business cards, bills, receipts, correspondence, circulars, notices and price lists. These materials are organized by manufacturing company. The umbrella manufacturing companies represented in this collection for the most part were found in the north particularly Boston, Philadelphia and New York. Most of these companies manufactured and sold other items such as parasols, walking canes, hats (caps), fans, leather goods, lingerie and ladies silk hosiery. They also tended to import fabrics for these goods and this information is clearly stated on documents. The materials date from 1833 to 1891 with the bulk of the material originating in the first half of the 19th century. Materials not organized by manufacturing company are divided into import/export documents the largest portion of the collection, related publications and general works which include mostly visual images containing no written information.

Scope and Contents:
This material consists primarily of periodicals (serial publications), including trade literature, educational, general interest, and leisure publications marketed to children, youths, and adults, plus related subscription information, and advertising information.

It dates from 1811-1966 but the bulk of the material dates from 1850-1920. The periodicals relate to a number of different interest groups including women, children, men, and family. Subjects include farming, the home, horses, advertising, art, railroads, hotels, food, literature, religion, medicine, mining, architecture, fashion and current events. While the majority of these periodicals are directed toward consumers, there are also a number of specialized professional and business publications. The periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title. Much of the material consists of subscription information directed to readers and information for advertisers including receipts, circulars cards and letters. Individual copies of the publications are listed with their date(s) of issue. Most of these were issued monthly; others weekly or quarterly.

Periodicals provide valuable information about the customs, styles and attitudes of the times and places in which they appear. Many feature elaborate illustrations and photographs by well-known practitioners and articles and stories by notable persons. Advertisements provide insight into social customs, commercial practices, and the evolving complexity of life in the last half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

The first group of materials, Periodicals, consists of copies of periodicals and related materials including receipts, circulars, subscription information, advertising information, letters, notes, and cards; arranged alphabetically by title.

Subscription Agencies and Dealers in Periodicals includes advertising circulars, price lists, and order forms arranged alphabetically by name of company.

Related Materials contains miscellaneous printers and publishers, samples of cover designs, and export/import documents

The Charles Henry Hart autograph collection dates from 1731-1917 and consists of 226 letters, portrait prints, and other documents signed by American artists.

Originally titled by Hart as "The History of Art in America as Told in a Remarkable Collection of Autograph Letters and Documents of Celebrated American Artists of the Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentieth Century," the collection includes letters and other items signed by Thomas Anshutz, John J. Audubon, William Merritt Chase, Frederic Edwin Church, John Singleton Copley, Kenyon Cox, Thomas Eakins, Jervis McEntee, Samuel F.B. Morse, Charles Willson Peale, Raphaelle Peale, Rembrandt Peale, Rubens Peale, Titian Peale, James Daivd Smillie, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, Abbott Handerson Thayer, John Vanderlyn, Elihu Vedder, John Quincy Adams Ward, Benjamin West, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and many others.

Biographical / Historical:
Charles Henry Hart (1847-1918) was a historian, lawyer, writer, and director, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1882-1904. Widely, he published on the subject of 18th and 19th century portraiture in the United States.
Related Materials:
The Archives of American Art also holds the personal papers of Charles Henry Hart, dating from 1774-1930, bulk 1888-1918.
Provenance:
The Charles Henry Hart autograph collection was donated to the Archives of American Art in 1954 as an anonymous gift. It is assumed that Hart assembled the letters. Original collation was two letterbooks entitled "The History of Art in America as Tolk in a Remarkable Collection of Autograph Letters and Documents of Celebrated American Artists of the Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentieth Century."
