Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of four photo albums filled with images from Michael Francis Malone's time at Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. They are all spiral bound and measure approximately 10 by 12 inches. In addition to photographs, the albums contain business cards; receipts; news clippings; and other ephemera. One album features hand-painted artwork on the cover. The collection also contains forty-three 35mm Kodachrome slides in original cardboard mounts, and a small selection of loose color and black and white prints of various sizes (the largest of which measures 8 by 10 inches). Images in the collection show various scenes on base; views of Malone on duty; aircraft; various sites in Thailand; various Thai citizens; and a number of images of a United Service Organizations (USO) show held at the base. Aircraft shown in the photographs include the North American T-39A (CT-39A) Sabreliner; Douglas B-66 Destroyer; Republic F-105 Thunderchief; Boeing KC-135; North American F-86 Sabre; Lockheed C-130 Hercules; and the McDonnell F-4 (F4H) Phantom II. Notable entertainers shown in the photographs include Bob Hope; Phyllis Diller; Joey Heatherton; Anita Bryant; Les Brown & His Band of Renown; and Vic Damone. Finally, the collection contains a small selection of Malone's military records and a few news clippings.
Biographical / Historical:
Michael Francis Malone was a military police officer with the 355th Air Police Squadron and was stationed at Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand from October 1966 to September 1967. While at Takhli, Malone took a number of photographs and also received additional photographs from a friend in the base's photo lab. One notable event during Mr. Malone's time at Takhli was a United Service Organizations (USO) appearance by Bob Hope. Mr. Malone retired from the military in August 1968 but served in the Air National Guard from the late 1980s until 2003. Malone was also a ranger with the National Park Service for 28 years.

This collection consists of approximately 869 negatives, 343 transparencies and 539 photographic prints of aircraft and cockpit shots. These images are divided into the forty-three groups, which include the following aircraft: Boeing B-17 'Swoose,' B-29 'Enola Gay,' B-36, KC-97L; Cessna Citation; Convair T-29; Curtiss A-4E; Douglas C-124; Falcon 50; Fokker F-27; Grumman E-2 Tracer and HU-16 Albatros; Jetstar Cabin; Junkers JU-52 and JU-388; Kaman 16-B; Learjet 25, 35, 36, and 802; Lockheed C-130; North American F-100 Simulator; Piper J-3 Cub; Providence Airline Corp CV-240; and Sabre 40. There is also a folder of correspondence between Webb and individuals / repositories regarding aircraft photography.
Biographical / Historical:
Michael Webb (1951-1986) was first an architectural photographer, but from 1977 until his death became focused exclusively on aviation photography.

This collection consists of 2,931 slides taken by Lawrence V. Smith of the following aircraft and spacecraft: Bell AH-1W (AH-1T+) SuperCobra; Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey); Sikorsky (S-70B) SH-60B Seahawk; Sikorsky (S-80) CH-53E Super; North American F-100 Super Sabre; Lockheed P-3 Orion; Grumman F-14 Tomcat; General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon; Lockheed C-130 Hercules; Skylab, Skylab 2; and (Space Shuttle) Endeavour (OV-15). The collection also contains slides of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia; the National Air and Space Museum; and general military shots of parachutists, military vehicles, marine landings and military air stations.
Biographical / Historical:
Lawrence V. Smith (1931-2010) was an Emmy Award-winning photographer. He received a bachlelor's degree in Education, majoring in Physical Science from Illinois State University and then began work on a Doctorate in biochemistry at Iowa State College. After a semester at Iowa State, Smith dropped out and accepted a position as a chemist at the US Rubber Company in Joliet, Illinois. Having lost his student exemption, Smith was drafted in the Army where he was an electronics instructor for the Nike guided missile system. During the mid-1950s he started to become involved in motion picture when he filmed an air show crash and sold the footage to the Today Show. Highlights of Smith's career include: his work as a CBS cameraman in Cuba, where he traveled with Castro during the Cuban Revolution, earning him his first Emmy; his work as a cameraman/correspondent for ABC-TV during the early states of the Vietnam War in 1965, garnering him his second Emmy; and his work as director of photography for Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom where he won two more Emmy award certificates. Smith worked under contract for the US Information Agency (USIA) specializing in helicopter photography of Apollo missions 11 through 16 and later covered aspects of the Skylab Program. Smith later had several independent film companies in Jacksonville Florida, where he expanded into video and began his own image library, specializing in transportation photography.

This collection consists of 1.8 cubic feet of technical manuals collected by Captain Cornell Aurell Varsogea, USAF , on the following aircraft: Lockheed C-130 Hercules, McDonnell F-4 Phantom II, Martin (Glenn L.) B-57 Canberra Family, Republic F-105 Thunderchief, Boeing KC-97 Stratofreighter, and Boeing KC-135.
Biographical / Historical:
Captain Cornell Aurell Varsogea, USAF (1947-1985), was a navigator and weapon systems officer. Captain Varsogea was with the 17th Wild Weasel Squadron from 1972-1973, flying Republic F-105 Thunderchiefs in Vietnam; he was with the Roving Ravens, 467th where he flew Martin (Glen L.) EB-57 Canberras, he also flew Lockheed C-130 Hercules with the Reserve unit and from 1977 until his death in 1985 he flew McDonnell F-4 Phantoms with the 191st Fighter Interceptor Group of the Michigan Air National Guard.
