This collection consists of material relating to Friedrich Wilhelm. "Willy" von Meister and his activities with the airship industries of Germany and the United States.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of material relating to F. W. "Willy" von Meister and his activities with the airship industries of Germany and the United States. The collection includes Christmas cards, including one with a written note to von Meister from Thomas G. W. "Tex" Settle, USN, 1937; seventeen black and white photo prints and postcards of the Hindenburg and Hugo Eckener, the head of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin; five Hindenburg envelopes; eighteen Hindenburg baggage labels; a printed passenger list for the first crossing of the Hindenburg from Lakehurst, New Jersey to Frankfurt; newspaper and magazine articles on airships; a Maybach Motor Company brochure written by von Meister; and several letters. Also included are fifteen black and white photographs and two sets of postcards of the Dornier DO-X flying boat, and Dornier DO-X baggage labels.

Biographical / Historical:
Friedrich Wilhelm "Willy" von Meister (1903-1978) was the representative of the Zeppelin organization's activities in the United States: Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei GmbH, American Zeppelin Transport, Inc., and Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH, from 1928 until 1938. After the crash of the Hindenburg in 1937, he assisted Dr. Hugo Eckener, head of the Zeppelin organization, in his attempts to obtain helium from the United States for the company's airships.

Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of documents, reports, news clippings, books, and photographs relating to rigid and nonrigid airships worldwide, including the USS Shenandoah; USS Akron; USS Macon; USS Los Angeles; Schutte-Lanz; R-23; TC-14: and the Zeppelins Hindenberg and Bodensee. It was compiled by Vaeth for personal and research reasons.
Biographical / Historical:
J. Gordon Vaeth (1921- ) is an accomplished author and historian on the subject of airships. He has been called 'leader of the airship underground' during his earlier days with the Naval Airship Program at the start of World War II. During his active duty in the Navy (1942-1946), he was assigned to Commander Airship Patrol Group One, later Commander Fleet, Airships, Atlantic, then to Lakehurst. He entered civilian life in 1947, continuing to work with programs relating to airships, including the Office of Naval Research, The Helios project, and Skyhook. He continues to author numerous professional articles and books on airships.

Additional materials: Mr. Vaeth also donated a number of books and volumes of "The Airship Quarterly" which are housed in National Air and Space Museum Branch Library.

Scope and Contents:
Included in this collection are numerous photographs of early Sloane, Deperdussen and Bleriot type aircraft. Newspaper clippings, photos and letters pertaining to the establishment of airmail service are an integral part of the collection. Photos of pioneer aviators such as Adolph Pegoud, Alys McKey Bryant, Percival Reid, Agnes Firth, and others are contained herein. Of interest are photos of the airship Hindenberg (purported to have been taken on her final voyage), a letter from Al Williams concerning the return of the Wright Flyer from London, and letters from the Christmas Aircraft Company.
Biographical / Historical:
Thomas E. Steptoe, an early proponent of Airmail service, learned to fly at the Sloane Flying School, circa 1910. A paper on aviation in the postal service, which he wrote in 1916, urged adoption of Air Mail Service. Mr. Steptoe was granted his 'Expert Pilot' certificate by the Aero Club of America 26 April 1920. He was also a member of The Early Birds.
