This accession consists of the National Zoological Park's (NZP) Office of Education (OE) records. These records consist of OE's general administrative files, files
concerning the activities of OE's Chief Judith White, and files that concern the development of OE's educational programs. The Office of Education is no longer extant. Its
functions have either been dissolved, absorbed into the office of the NZP's Associate Director for Interpretive Programs, or continued by the Education Department of the Friends
of the National Zoo (FONZ). Judith White was instrumental in developing many of the National Zoo's educational programs, as well as serving as the President of the International
Association of Zoo Educators (IZE) and as Chair of the Council of Museum Education Directors. There are several folders that contain correspondence, memoranda, and drafts
that outline her involvement with IZE. The general administrative files of OE contain budgetary information, correspondence, annual reports, long-range planning, and a file
of memoranda that outline the Office's history. A major portion of the records concern the educational programs developed by OE and Judith White. Many of the programs such
as: HerpLab, BirdLab, ZooLab, and ZooAnimals were animal related educational programs directed toward Kindergarten through 6th grade audiences, but there were programs for
High School students and teacher workshops. The files also contain a section devoted to the OE's programs with the District of Columbia Public Schools.
