Gordon Enoch Gates (1897-1987), an authority on the taxonomy, morphology, physiology, and zoogeography of earthworms, served as Head of the Biology Department at Judson
College in Burma, 1921-1941; Professor of Biology at Rangoon College, 1941-1946; Fellow, Museum of Comparative Zoology, 1946-1947; Professor of Biology, Colby College, 1948-1950;
and Guggenheim Fellow, 1951- 1952. Gates donated his collection of worms to the National Museum of Natural History. These papers consist mostly of incoming correspondence
with invertebrate zoologists, museums, colleges and universities, and collectors concerning his research on earthworms. The majority of letters were written after Gates' retirement
in 1952 when he was conducting independent research.
