The Smithsonian Institution Festival of American Folklife, held annually since 1967 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was renamed the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 1998. The materials collected here document the planning, production, and execution of the annual Festival, produced by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (1999-present) and its predecessor offices (1967-1999). This collection documents the planning, production, and execution of the 1975 Festival of American Folklife. Materials may include photographs, audio recordings, motion picture film and video recordings, notes, production drawings, contracts, memoranda, correspondence, informational materials, publications, and ephemera. Such materials were created during the Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as well as in the featured communities, before or after the Festival itself.

Introduction:
The 1975 Festival (June 25-29 and July 2-6) again took place in the western part of the National Mall to the south of the Reflecting Pool, between 17th and 23rd Streets (see site plan). It was co-organized by the Smithsonian Institution, Division of Performing Arts (James R. Morris, Director; Richard Lusher, Deputy Director) and the National Park Service (Gary Everhardt, Director). Ralph Rinzler was Director of the Festival, and Robert Byington was Deputy Director of the Festival. Mack McCormick served as Consultant for Bicentennial Planning. The 1975 and 1976 Festivals were sponsored by American Airlines and General Foods.

The 1975 Festival included seven programs, with cross-Festival presentations on the Festival Stage. The 1975 Program Book provided information on each of the programs, as well as a schedule and participant lists.

Introduction:
In 1973, the Smithsonian Institution began preparing its multi-year commemoration of the Bicentennial of the American Revolution in 1976. Beginning with this year's Festival, the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior became co-sponsor of the Festival with the Smithsonian, and it was moved to the western part of the National Mall alongside the Reflecting Pool, between 17th and 23rd Streets, and between Constitution Avenue N.W. and Independence Avenue S.W. (see site plan). As explained by Secretary S. Dillon Ripley, "Themes and presentations for this Festival are a trial run for the themes around which our own celebration of America's 200th birthday will be organized."

The 1973 Festival ran from June 30 to July 8 and included four programs that initiated the Bicentennial preparations: Regional America featured the Commonwealth of Kentucky; Native Americans featured Northern Plains tribes; Working Americans featured the building trades; and Old Ways in the New World was inaugurated with two programs: Tribute to the Tamburashi presented Yugoslavian and Yugoslavian American traditions, and British Isles Music, Song, and Dance Traditions included participants from England, Scotland, Ireland and the U.S. Of these programs, Native Americans and Working Americans extended throughout the nine-day Festival, with the British Isles program running the first four days, the Tamburashi program running the first five days, and Kentucky featured for the last five days. During the Festival, evening concerts were presented on a stage at the base of the Lincoln Memorial; documentation of those concerts is found within each of the relevant programs whose musicians were featured.

The 1973 Festival was co-organized by the Smithsonian Institution, Division of Performing Arts (James R. Morris, Director; Richard Lusher, Deputy Director) and the National Park Service (Ronald H. Walker, Director). Ralph Rinzler was Director of Folklife Programs, with Gerald L. Davis serving as Associate Director and Kenneth S. Goldstein as Special Assistant to the Secretary on Folklore and Folklife.

The 1973 Program Book provided information on all of the programs, including a schedule and participant lists.

Introduction:
After the 1967 Festival proved to be a great success, the Smithsonian decided that the Festival of American Folklife would become an annual event. The 1968 Festival took place July 3-7 on the National Mall, between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive and between 10th Street and 14th Street, south of the Museum of History and Technology and the Museum of Natural History (see site map). It followed the same approach that had proven effective in 1967, but innovated by also including a program focused on a single State, Texas.

As in 1967, the Festival was organized by the Division of Performing Arts, James R. Morris, Director, and directed by Festival Director Ralph C. Rinzler.

The 1968 Program Book included information to complement each of the programs, ranging from discussions of the definitions of folklore and folklife to the relations between folklife and cultural history. Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley, in his introduction to the booklet, noted that:

The Festival of American Folklife offers the Smithsonian Institution an opportunity to show through demonstration and performance some aspects of the cultural roots of the people of the United States. The Festival is a living exhibition of the creativity of the many ethnic groups that make up the culture of this country.

After the 1967 Festival proved to be a great success, the Smithsonian decided that the Festival of American Folklife would become an annual event. The papers of artists and art educators Harold Helwig and Lenore Davis measue 14.5 linear feet and 7.85 Gigabytes and contains correspondence, video recordings, some in digital format, photographs and slides, exhibition ephemera, clippings and various other printed material, and artwork.

Biographical material includes resumes, school papers, artist inventories, and contacts lists. The collection's correspondence is both personal and business related, and includes a series of letters from Davis' mother, Mary Shope Davis, to her brother and sister-in-law from the 1940s. Other material found in this collection documents Helwig's and Davis' involvement in exhibitions; national and local craft-related guilds and associations, education; sale of artwork and services; research material; and printed ephemera. The collection's photographs include the personal and professional side of Helwig and Davis' life.

Biographical / Historical:
Harold Helwig (1938-2012) and Lenore Davis (1936-1995) were a craft artist couple as well as craft educators living primarily in Newport Kentucky.

Harold "Bill" Helwig (1938-2012) was an enamel artist and educator born in Wellington, Kansas in 1938. Helwig received his MS in watercolor from Fort Hayes Kansas State College in 1961. After a short stint in the military, Helwig became the assistant director of the Creative Craft Center at the State University of New York, Buffalo (he served as an assistant professor in the design department there as well). In 1977, Helwig took the position of director at Vitrearc, a division of Ceramic Coating Co., in Newport, Kentucky. After Vitrearc, Helwig's primary focus shifted towards creating enamel art and teaching its process. Included in Helwig's artistic accomplishments was a selection in the international exhibition Objects: USA(1969), exhibitions in the Ornamental Metals Museum in Memphis, Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York City, and the CCA Galleries in Cambridge, England. Helwig was an active member of the American Craft Council as co-founder and editor of Glass On Metal. He received the Enamellist Society's Creative Arts Award in 2001.

Lenore Davis (1936-1995) was a fiber artist and educator born in Missoula Montana in 1936. She received her BS from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1958. After college, Davis taught high school art, and held a position as a craft director with the US Army Special Services in Germany. After these jobs, Davis received her MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1965, and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study ceramics in Portugal in 1966. After her scholarship, Davis began her career as a full-time artist showcasing her work individually and as part of group exhibitions at craft shows, galleries, and museums across the United States. She also led workshops, made instructional videos, and worked for commissions. Davis was a member of the Surface Design Association, National Institute of American Doll Artists, American Craft Council, Kentucky Guild of Craftsmen, and Greater Cincinnati Guild of Craftsmen.

Harold Helwig and Lenore Davis married in 1968. As a couple they worked collaboratively on two-person shows as well as part of larger group exhibitions. In addition to conducting various workshops and lectures, both Davis and Helwig taught classes at Penland School of Craft between the late-1970s and mid-1990s.

Records from Coe's time at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (1959-1982) include administrative papers and correspondence, some exhibition material, and papers related to Coe's resignation as director in 1982. Coe's association and membership records document his affiliation with various collections, government institutions, professional societies, and non-profit organizations. Coe's collector files consist of papers related to the purchase of Native American and European art for both himself and on behalf of Henry Bloch, as well as art loans from Coe's personal collection and tours held at his home. Biographical / Historical:
Ralph T. Coe (1929-2010) was a museum director, art collector, writer, and art historian who primarily focused on contemporary Native American art, but also worked on European impressionism to some extent. He was born in Cleveland Ohio, received his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1953, and then his M.A. from Yale University in 1957. His first position out of Yale was as an assistant curator for the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Coe then worked for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri from 1959 to 1982.

In 1982 Coe was officially hired by the National Museum of American Art as a senior visiting scholar, working on an acquisition/exhibition project. This project ultimately produced the traveling exhibition, Lost and Found Traditions: Native American Art 1965-1985 (1985-1986), and established the largest collection of Native American contemporary art at the time. The project was funded by The American Federation of Arts (AFA) in conjunction with the American Can Corporation. It first opened at the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, in 1986, and then traveled for two years under the auspices of the AFA. The collection was showcased at the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, and the Kulturhuset, Stockholm, Sweden, among others. Coe also published a book-length catalogue for the exhibit.

As an independent art historian and writer, Coe published essays, articles, and book chapters. Coe worked closely with the collections of Eugene V. Thaw and Henry Bloch, and functioned as both a committee and trustee member for several organizations including the American Federation of Arts, Association of Art Museum Directors, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Art Advisory Panel, the American Council for Cultural Policy, the Archives of American Art, and the Southwestern Association on Indian Affairs.

As an art collector, Coe consistently traveled throughout North America meeting with Native American artists and cultural representatives. Coe established a wide range of relationships with Native American communities from coast to coast as he collected their art and engaged with their cultural practices.

Scope and Contents:
Loan agreements, inventories, articles and essays on the topic of collecting, ephemera from galleries such as Sotheby's and Christie's, and other priced Native American and European art. Also included is correspondence with Henry Bloch, president of H&R Block. Coe, as a collector and art historian, aided Bloch in acquiring art for his own collection.

Some papers related to Coe's collecting of Native American art from 1979 to 1985 is also found in Series 4.1.
