In 1962, Carl Ally, a rising star in the advertising business, established his own firm, Carl Ally, Inc., with colleague Amil Gargano as art director. In 1976 they changed the business name to Ally and Gargano, Inc. Known for its aggressive advertising style, Ally and Gargano represented approximately ninety clients, fifty-two of which are represented here, including Hertz, Federal Express, and IBM.

Advertising portfolios including copies of print advertisements published for fifty-two accounts over a twenty-five year period. Some clients include Hertz, Federal Express, International Business Machines Corporation.

Biographical / Historical:
After seven years as a rising star in the advertising business, Carl Ally (1925-1999) created his own advertising agency in 1962, bringing with him former colleague and art director Amil Gargano. In 1976, Carl Ally, Inc., became Ally and Gargano, and three years later, Ally withdrew from active participation in the firm. In 1983, the agency, with a roster of nearly 300 employees, went public; in 1986 the Marketing Corporation of America (MCA) purchased Ally and Gargano for $26.6 million; in 1991 Amil Gargano left the firm which went out of business in 1995.
During its years as an independent advertising agency, (1962-1987), Ally and Gargano created highly successful and widely recognized advertising campaigns for over ninety clients. Carl Ally was especially known for an aggressive advertising style, most notably his work for Hertz in the late 1960s and early 1970s, in which he used in a competitor's name, Avis, in advertisements.
Ally and Gargano also made invaluable contributions to two new firms that quickly became leading American businesses --Federal Express and MCI. Founded in 1971, Federal Express had accrued $26 million in losses by 1974, after only eighteen months in operation; its nightly package delivery count was 210 items. Ally and Gargano advertising, beginning with a budget of only $150,000, was critical to the rapid Federal Express turnaround. MCI selected Ally and Gargano to introduce its residential long distance service in 1979. Within a year, new customer enrollment reached three times the expected level, and four years after the launch of the advertising campaign, MCI's total sales rose from $95 million to $2.7 billion.

This series consists of personal and work-related correspondence (primarily incoming correspondence) between Cahill and various friends and colleagues. While a large portion of the series documents Cahill's position as Director of the FAP, it also extends beyond those years and illuminates other aspects of Cahill's career including his interest in folk and Asian art, and his work as an art critic.
There is significant correspondence with the artist Stanton MacDonald Wright between 1936 and 1950, and with the artist Irene Pereira between 1950 and 1953. The series also documents research which Cahill conducted in the late 1940s on the development of the Index of American Design for his introduction to a book on the Index by the National Gallery of Art, published by the Macmillan Company. Correspondence from 1949 provides another angle on the historical details of the FAP through lengthy correspondence documenting Cahill's criticism of William Francis McDonald's book Federal Relief Administration and the Arts (Ohio State University Press, 1969).
There is a large amount of correspondence from July 1960 comprising sympathy letters to Dorothy C. Miller following Cahill's death. Correspondence from 1977 encloses a catalog of an exhibition organized by New York WPA Artists, Inc., at the Parsons School of Design in November 1977. The exhibition, New York City WPA Art, was dedicated to the memory of Holger Cahill.

This collection consists of two original paper drawings of the Star Trek Starship Enterprise 33-inch model plans, drawn by Matt Jefferies in 1964. One of the drawing is 56 by 30 inches, the other is 42.5 by 27.75 inches. The back of one of the drawings also include a sample of over sprayed paint from the base color of the 33-inch model, and both have handwritten notes and diagrams from model-maker Richard C. Datin.
Biographical / Historical:
The weekly hour-long Star Trek TV show (NBC-TV), which aired from September 1966 until June 1969, became one of the most popular shows in the history of television. The show's depiction of a racially-integrated, multinational crew of men and women working together successfully, as well as its attention to contemporary social and political issues, pushed the boundaries of network television, earning Star Trek a dedicated fan base.
The principal designer of the Star Trek Starship Enterprise model, Walter "Matt" Jefferies, worked with concepts provided by Star Trek's creator Gene Roddenberry. A 33 inch model mostly of solid wood was then built by model-maker Richard C. Datin under subcontract to the Howard Anderson Company. This model, created as a study model and for publicity shots, did appear in some episodes. For production, however, Desilu/Howard Anderson ordered a larger model, the 11-foot Star Trek Starship Enterprise studio model (held by the Museum since 1974) which was built from enlarging the 33 inch model plans.
