Scope and Contents:
This material consists primarily of advertising cards, bills/receipts, printed advertisements, book marks, cook books, labels, pamphlets, and recipe books, scattered correspondence on letterhead stationery from manufacturers and distributors of baking powders. These companies also tended to sell other products including bakers' supplies, spices, coffee, teas, cream of tartar, cigars, tobacco, gloss starch, laundry bluing, soap powder, baking soda, soap, corn starch, phosphate of calcium, powdered gelatin and other shelf groceries. The B. T. Babbitt Company located in New York distributed a number of pamphlets and printed advertisements containing reproductions of popular paintings by American artist including Paul de Longpre, Virginia Janus, Percy Moran and J. L. Ferris. Larger size reproductions could be obtained by sending the company trade marks from their products. Other manufacturers such as Edward Canby offered free libraries to their customers. Some of these companies are also in other subject categories such as chemicals, baking soda, patent medicine, images children, art, women, nature scenes, and courtship scenes.

Publications include two pamphlets. Both pamphlets were articles which appeared in the Pharmaceutical Record. "Baking Powders, An Essay on their Composition and Action" (April 1, 1887) was written by George Holland and "Baking Powders" (June 1, 1888) written by C. V. Petraeus discuss the physical qualities of baking powders. H. D. Thatcher & Company also published a pamphlet on the same subject titled "How to Test Baking Powder, Illustrated and Explained for the Practical Use not Only of the Scientist but for the Common People and the Ordinary Cook, with Descriptions of Thatcher's Sugar of Milk Baking Powder and Selected Cooking Recipes "(1890).

Materials are organized alphabetically by name of company. There are three folders of material grouped by type: labels, related pamphlets and miscellaneous items. Miscellaneous items consist of advertising cards with no company to identify manufacturer or dealer.

These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. An overview to the entire Warshaw collection is available here: Warshaw Collection of Business Americana
Scope and Contents note:
This subject category- Advertising Industry consists primarily of printed advertisements, cut books, correspondence on letterhead, bills and receipts, pamphlets, booklets, notices, articles, stock cuts, illustrations for advertisers, periodicals, registers, directories, streetcar advertisements, price lists for advertising space in newspapers, and books. Most of the material is from advertisers and advertising agencies. The bulk of the material dates from the latter part of the nineteenth century and early part of the twentieth century with materials created both in the United States and in foreign countries.

There is a significant amount of material from companies that manufactured and sold supplies for advertising agencies. Such supplies include signs, bill posters, printing plates, and advertising cards. A large majority of these companies supplied businesses with advertising cuts used for folders, inserts, blotters, envelopes, booklets, programs, labels, bags, calendars, letterhead, and newspaper and magazine advertisements. Such cuts could be ordered by selecting the number and requesting one or two colors.

Other businesses offered services for companies wishing to advertise. These services include instructions for writing advertisements, facilities for producing copies, designs, engraving, and printing, along with the production and maintenance of the work supplied.

There are a number of items, primarily receipts and correspondence on letterhead, from organizations for the advertising industry. Such organizations include the Advertising Federation of America, American Press Association, Associated Advertising Clubs of America, Outdoor Advertising Association, Old National Distributing Association, Association of National Advertisers, and the American Association of Advertising Agencies.

Among the publications in the materials are directories, registers, and supplements for advertisers. These materials date from 1913-1948 and include information such as listings of national and local advertising agencies, with their branches, personnel, recognition and memberships in organizations, and a listing of their accounts. There are also a number of publications which discus the general history of advertising. The bulk of the publications, however, are periodicals that relate to the advertising industry and date from 1866-1940.
Arrangement note:
This subject is arranged into four series.

A New York bookseller, Warshaw assembled this collection over nearly fifty years. The Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Afro-Americana forms part of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Subseries 1.1: Subject Categories. The Subject Categories subseries is divided into 470 subject categories based on those created by Mr. Warshaw. These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. An overview to the entire Warshaw collection is available here: Warshaw Collection of Business Americana
Scope and Contents note:
This material consists primarily of information relating to significant events in the history of African Americans in the United States. Most of the materials relate to the issue of slavery, race relations and the Civil Rights Movement. Images of African Americans created for commercial use also comprise a large portion of these materials. There is a small amount of information relating to events in France. Although most of the materials are about African Americans, there are only a few created by them.

Materials are arranged by topic to include slavery, abolition, colonization, Reconstruction, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement. The earliest materials relate to slavery and consist primarily of receipts for truces paid on property, advertisements announcing the sale of slaves, passes, promissory notes and speeches questioning slavery.

Late nineteenth century materials relate to organizations created by African Americans in an effort to improve their quality of life. Such organizations include hospitals, homes for orphans, schools, and political associations. These materials aid in our understanding of African Americans as active members of society rather than as victims.

In contrast the largest amount of material from this time period consists of commercial images created by advertisers. Such commercial art reflects the political, social, economic and psychological concerns of the time. The perceptions and fears of the wider society were depicted primarily on advertising cards. Such advertising cards used stereotypical images of African Americans to sell products. These products often included soap, stove polish, tobacco, cosmetics, whiskey, cereal, flour, greeting cards, coffee, baking soda, blacking, bluing, paint, varnish, and music. Often there appears to be no connection between image and product. In those instances African Americans were used to supply the humor. Occasionally there was logic between the image and the product. The logic between the product and the image of African Americans generally was a reference to skin color or lack of education and or social skills.

There are also a number of advertisements portraying African Americans from magazines. These images differed from the ones used on advertising cards which is probably due to the national character of magazines. African Americans were generally portrayed as servants such as Ratus "Cream of Wheat", Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben.

Twentieth century materials cover events and organizations formed during the Civil Rights Movement. Ephemera from C.O.R.E., S.C.L.C. and N.A.A.C.P. represent types of materials that were circulated during the period. There is little or no commercial imagery from this time period.
Arrangement note:
Materials in box one through two are arranged by topic. Part of box two contains images of African Americans consisting of engravings, chromolithographs, photographs and a few commercial images not associated with a product.

Box three contains photocopies of stereotypical images of blacks used to sell specific products. The originals are found in the subject category that it represents.

Additional information may be found in the subject labeled medicine.

This material contains information on diseases, x-ray, instruments, insanity, tuberculosis, cancer, female medicine, medical schools, anesthetics (ether).
Biographical / Historical:
Before the Pure Food and Drug Administration was instituted in 1908 there were no restrictions on the claims or contents of medications available to the public without a physician prescription. This is reflected in the advertisements and testimonials as seen in this material. Many of the companies manufactured and distributed other products such as cosmetics, hair preparations and dyes; therefore researchers interested in chemical substances other than medical treatments would also be interested in this subject. The material dates from ca. 1800-1956 but, the bulk is late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Many diseases in the 19th century were known by names not currently used at this time. Throughout much of the material consumption which is known as tuberculosis was of great concern. Other diseases include kidney ailments (renal disease) referred to as Bright's disease, catarrh referred to the common cold, bronchitis, or sinusitis, gleet discharge from any body area used for example in gonorrhea and syphilis and scrophula glandular diseases many times accompanied by eruptions. Diseases that were considered curable by many of the medications described in this collection were catarrh, Bright's disease, anemia, syphilis, female diseases, gonorrhea, nervousness, tiredness and listlessness, headaches, weight loss, backaches, alcoholism, masturbation, typhoid, malaria, children's diseases and narcotic addiction.

Scope and Contents:
The subject category-maps contain materials dealing with maps and map-making. There are materials from companies such as business cards, invoices, and correspondence. The bulk of the materials are maps. There are a number of maps from the United States in the form of both road maps and state maps. There are a number of World Maps as well both as whole world maps and individual continents and countries. The collection also consists of several Atlases and other general information. Researchers looking for historical maps will find this information very useful.

Company papers are of those involved in the development, publication, distribution and sale of maps. Materials include business cards, advertising brochures and circulars, receipts, catalogues, and invoices. There is also several correspondences. Most deal with requests for changes in preparation for updated publications while others involve account payment concerns. There is one correspondence regarding a political meeting of the Progressives (1912). Several of the correspondence from various companies is to the Riehle Bros. There is also an undated Rand, McNally & Co. display kit in one of the oversize folders. The bulk of the materials are from the mid- to late-19th century. The vast majority of the companies were based in New York but there were others in Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, and Hartford as well as Ohio, West Virginia, New Jersey, and Westfield, Massachusetts. One company had offices in several different states across the eastern half of the United States. There is also a company in Scotland and one in London. The material is arranged alphabetically by the company name with the last 2 folders being miscellaneous and import/export documents.

United States maps contains road maps and others are historical. The bulk of the maps are from the 1770s and the 1920s. There are a number of materials in this series located in Oversize and Map Case Folders. The U.S. materials have been grouped together in those folders.

The road maps grouping is United States centric and are primarily from the early 20th century. Materials include tour books, road guides, auto road maps, and auto trails maps. Some include directions and mileage charts. They are arranged alphabetically according to the state or region. Maps that could not be placed with a single state or region are at the end of the series in a "general" category. Some of the maps were published by such companies as AAA, U.S. Survey Company, Gulf Refining Company, and Rand, McNally and Company.

State maps include engravings that are primarily historical in context. The bulk of these materials are from the 1770s. Many of them are from "Dr. Gordon's History of the American War". Materials also include general U.S. maps and books. They are arranged alphabetically according to the state or region. Maps that could not be placed with a single state or region are at the end of the series in a "general" category. Those materials are arranged chronologically where possible.

Most of the World maps are historical engravings. The vast majority of the materials are undated. However, many of them appear to be from the same source and a few of those are noted to be from the 1750s. Materials are arranged alphabetically according to the country or continent with a group of "general" folders at the end of the series.

Atlas books are from various sources. All dated books are from the 1800s. They are arranged chronologically for the U.S. publications with foreign books following and a miscellaneous folder at the end of the series.

General information has a variety of formats and topics such as geography lessons, a listing of topographical maps available from the U.S. Geological Survey, a list of conventional signs and abbreviations in use on French and German maps, catalogues of old and rare maps, and a publication for map collectors. There is also a miscellaneous folder including a postcard with a map of Cripple Creek District, Colorado, a business card of a hydrographer in New York, a chart comparing the height of mountains and the size of cities (ca.1850), an engraving called "The Artificial Sphere" which includes information such as the poles, meridian, and horizon, and a request from the U.S. Geological survey for information in preparation for production of a U.S. map. Included in the oversize materials are 2 drawn survey maps of S.B. Seaman's Platt. The location of this property is otherwise unidentified. There is also a book in the oversize materials called "The Rare Map of the Northwest 1785" by John Fitch – a Bibliographical Account by P. Lee Phillips published in 1916. Materials are arranged according to subject.

These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. An overview to the entire Warshaw collection is available here: Warshaw Collection of Business Americana
Scope and Contents note:
Motion pictures were first publicly exhibited in the United States at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois in 1893. While the films exhibited there were technically crude with little to no plot or story and far from the polished product of today, they immediately caught the public's attention.

Within a short time the motion picture industry (creation, distribution, and marketing) had grown into a lucrative business. Those first motion pictures were often short serial films run in a series to keep customers coming back to follow the story's plot line to its conclusion. Gradually, films became longer and a number of performers developed legions of fans guaranteeing a certain amount of box office business from name recognition of the star alone.

Initially, the film industry consisted of many small companies, but competition cleared the field and fewer, larger corporations cornered the market in both production and distribution. Independent theatre owners, who were at first almost wholly independent of the production companies, also became rare as the major theatre chains developed their own movie studios to ensure a steady stream of films to be shown at their theaters. The film industry, at first based in New York City and on the East Coast, moved to the famed Hollywood, California, in the late 1910s early 1920s.

The Motion Pictures section of the Warshaw Collection consists of various types of materials relating to motion pictures. The collection is especially strong for the silent movie era, 1893-1927. This portion of the collection is divided into seven series.
