Abstract:
The field book documents the field work of Lester F. Ward for the US Geological Survey, October 29, 1893 - June 4, 1897. Notes describe observations of sites in District of Columbia, Maryland, and northern Virginia. Entries are headed with date, location visited, and reference to name of colleague with whom worked (Bibbons, Hollick, Mason, and Watson). These are followed with narratives describing locations, nature of work completed (sometimes procuring and research sites where fossilized plants found), and sometimes followed by numbered sites with descriptions per site including landmarks (i.e. structures, streets, and distances from), measurements (of layers), terrain and soil characteristics (color, composition,i.e. sand, loam, gravel, clay). Includes geological sections. Details collecting fossilized botanical specimens, some with identifying numbers. Locations include sites across Maryland.

The field book documents the field work of Lester F. Ward for the US Geological Survey, October 1, 1894 - June 30, 1895. Work was completed with several different colleagues over the span of time. Entries describe work in office or field work. Field work entries are headed with date, name of colleague with whom he worked, location, and nature of work completed. Several visits were to sites where fossilized plant specimens were discovered. These entries describe locations (distances and landmarks including structures); terrain characteristics including ground composition, type of stone, color, measurements of layers, time period (Cambrian Carboniferous); and fossilized plant specimens collected. Note states that some paleontological and stratigraphical results are recorded in local field notebook. Locations across Virginia, Maryland, Alabama (Montgomery), and Georgia (Chattahoochee River).

Abstract:
The field book documents the field work of Lester F. Ward for the US Geological Survey, January 2, 1897 to December 29, 1898. Entries are headed with date and include narratives detailing work completed in the office and in the field collecting fossilized plant specimens. These describe studies of collections, work completed by colleagues (various, usually refer to by last name), and visits to collecting sites. Field work entries usually begin with description of work completed, i.e. studying Tuscaloosa deposits in South Carolina discovered by Mr. Glenn. Site descriptions include landmarks and distances, geological periods, formations, terrain, layer characters and composition, types of specimens collected, campsites, and geological sections. Sites visited (including railroad cuts), ravines, and along side bodies of water. If collecting was completed in District of Columbia vicinity is described in "local field book" according to notes. Locations are across South Carolina and Kansas.

Abstract:
The field book documents the field work of Lester F. Ward for the US Geological Survey, July 1, 1895 to December 31, 1896. Entries are dated and describe daily work completed, fossil plant collections collected (refers to other notebooks (local field books) with additional information), excursions, meetings and work with colleagues, and fossilized plant specimens (sometimes with specimen numbers). Some excursions are back to where specimens were previously collected. Indicates the notebook covers a trip to South Dakota to study cycads, Kootanie beds in Great Falls Montana, and Oroville region of California, and study in northeast United States as part of the "Island Series". These sites include the north end of Long Island including Montauk Point (New York) and Block Island (Rhode Island); as well as expedition to Kansas and Indiana territory for examining lower Cretaceous deposits. Field work descriptions include details about terrain, geological layers (color, characteristics), distances from landmarks; and types of shell, plant, and mammal fossils. Also includes contact information for colleagues.
