6 electronic discs (dvd)
Type:
Archival materials
Videocassettes (vhs)
Videocassettes (betamax)
Electronic discs (dvd)
Date:
1985-2002, undated
Scope and Contents:
Series 13 is not processed and based on an initial assessment the series, to a greater or lesser extent, is related to Dr. Laughlin's work with the Sna Jtz'ibajom in Chiapas, Mexico or Chiapas more broadly. The series consists of edited and unedited "amateur" video recordings; semi-professional video recordings; off-air video recordings; professionally made documentaries on both videocassettes and electronic discs roughly dating from 1985 to 2002. Unless otherwise noted, the creator is unknown or not captured at the time of the initial assessment. For many of the amateur videocassettes it is unknown whether the video is the original or a copy although with full processing this may become more evident. All known and captured production information is included in the subseries.

Many of the video recordings are directly associated with Sna Jtz'ibajom (House of the writer), a writers cooperative based in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, that Laughlin helped to establish in 1983. The purpose was to take writings about Tzotzil history, folklore and customs and translate them into Tzotzil. The cooperative also created Teatro Lo'il Maxil (Monkey Business Theater) a group that wrote and performed plays related to Mayan folklore and education about important social issues such as family planning and alcoholism.

Video recordings and DVDs listed below are part of the National Anthropological Film Collection (NAFC). Items are grouped in what appeared to be related or similar content and were given NAFC film numbers in no particular order. Full processing will undoubtedly change some of the relationships.
Arrangement:
This series is arranged in 7 subseries: 13.1 Robert Laughlin presentations and lectures, 1985, 1999, undated; 13.2 Interviews and translations, 2002; 13.3 Teatro Lo'il Maxil Performances, Chiapas, Mexico, circa 1996; 13.4 Sna Jtz'ibajom, San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, circa 1992; 13.5 Ceremonies and meetings, 2001; 13.6 Chanob Vun School, 1996; 13.7 Miscellaneous video recordings, circa 1990-1999, undated.
Collection Restrictions:
The Robert Moody Laughlin papers are open for research.

Electronic media is currently restricted due to preservation concerns.

Video Recordings

Collection Creator:
Howard Wise Gallery  Search this
Extent:
2.5 Linear feet (Boxes 9-12)
Type:
Archival materials
Date:
1973 - circa 1985
Scope and Contents:
Series contains video footage shot by Howard Wise, mainly of interviews with artists in Wellfleet, Mass. and other Cape Cod locations. Most of the video recordings by Wise contain raw, unedited footage, and individual tapes may contain more than one subject. A video log book containing notes on many of the videos lists additional subjects for each tape, with page numbers corresponding to numbers on tapes. Many tapes also have detailed labels. A few of the interviews seem to have been edited later into a series Wise called "Video Portraits," including intervies with Serge Chermeyeff, Edwin Dickinson, and Jack Tworkov. A printed program for a public screening of these works, called "Video Capers" is found at the beginning of the series. Note that not all of the subjects listed in the program are represented in the extant footage. An interview with Howard Wise is also found. Interviews are on 21 videoreels (1/2") and 4 videocassettes (U-matic)

In addition to interviews, events such as art openings, benefits, gallery tours, local camp activities are documented in the recordings. A dinner party with Jean Dubuffet and Thomas Messer, as well as footage of the premiere performance of Dubuffet's Coucou Bazaar at the Guggenheim Museum, are also found. Recordings of panel discussions held on board an ocean liner, mostly on science subjects, are also found. Events are on 12 videoreels (1/2").

Footage of kinetic, media, and performance artworks includes multiple works from the 1967 Lights in Orbit exhibition and Nam June Paik at Bonino Gallery on 1 videocassette (VHS), multiple Howard Wise Gallery exhibitions from 1964-1965 on two videocassettes (U-matic), including On the Move (1964), Group Zero (1964), Gerald Oster, and Len Lye's Bounding Steel Sculptures (1965). Also found is a video performance by Hannah Wilke labeled "Noh Film" on 1 video reel.
Arrangement:
Video recordings are arranged alphabetically by name for videos whose dominant subject is an individual, followed by videos documenting events in chronological order. Moving image material created by others is arranged at the end of the series.
Collection Restrictions:
The collection is open for research. Use requires an appointment. Use of archival audiovisual recordings with no duplicate access copy requires advance notice.
Collection Rights:
The Howard Wise Gallery records are owned by the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Literary rights as possessed by the donor have been dedicated to public use for research, study, and scholarship. The collection is subject to all copyright laws.
