Scope and Contents:
Still photographs shot by E. Richard Sorenson while working for NIH. These stills were shot between 1963-1968 in Papua New Guinea. The still negatives were brought to the Smithsonian when Sorenson began the National Anthropological Film Center in 1975. May be associated with NIH motion picture film that Sorenson shot that was also transferred to the Smithsonian.

Full film record was shot by Michael Maloney, employee of the National Human Studies Film Center (NHSFC), Smithsonian Institution and co-principal investigator for the Study of Child Behavior and Human Development in Cultural Isolates (SCBHDCI) with E. Richard Sorenson and in cooperation with The Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) in Papua New Guinea. The Miyanmin of Bowye Creek (West Sepik Province, Yapsie) were selected for study due to their remote location and lack of previous contact with outsiders by anthropologist E. Richard Sorenson and T. Wayne Dye, SIL Anthropology Consultant and Coordinator. Guided by the NHSFC Ethnographic Research Film Methodology during the December 21, 1978 through March 26, 1979 expedition, the film record focuses on the daily clan life and interactions among children, infants, family members, clan relations, and non-clan visitors. Film record contains daily life activities that include food gathering/ preparation/distribution, subsistence gardening, harvesting and preparing sago palm, grooming, tool making, curing practices and rituals, shared infant care taking, age-grade interactions, decorating spear tips, preparing clan feasts (taro, manioc, feral pig), celebratory displays and a burial. Also recorded are contact with non-clan Papua New Guinea citizens and a government census patrol.

Research film record was shot by M. Filmed during the August 11, 1980 through October, 15 1980 expedition this research film record follows up on the 1978 research filming [Film Studies of Traditional Cultures in New Guinea: Miyanmin 1978-79] so as to document seasonal variations in the way of life and to extend the behavioral sample. The film record documents a changed residential pattern (from haus singsing to village residential layout). Film sample maintains focus on on daily clan life (two clans in residence) and interactions among children, infants, family members, clan relations, and non-clan visitors. Film record contains daily life activities that include food gathering/ preparation/distribution, subsistence gardening, grooming, tool making, curing practices and rituals, shared infant care taking, age-grade interactions, decorating spear tips, preparing clan feasts.

Full film record was created for the National Anthropological Film Center, Smithsonian Institution and was filmed among the Canela Indians, a Ge speaking tribe in northeastern Brazil. Research film project concentrates on socialization of children. Footage also contains daily life activities including food preparation, cultivation, hunting, grooming, and playing soccer. An initiation of boys with accompanying celebrations and log racing, Wild Boar day, and a funeral were also filmed.

Full film record was shot by Steven Schecter, employee of the National Human Studies Film Center, Smithsonian Institution, in collaboration with anthropologist William Crocker, of the Canela Indians, a Ge speaking tribe in northeastern Brazil. Research film project, directed by anthropologist E. Richard Sorenson, concentrates on interactions of children and infants with parents and siblings and children with other children in various settings. Footage also contains daily life activities including food preparation and distribution, doing bead work, hunting, preparing manioc, grooming, making and cooking meat pies, and collecting honey and a funeral.
