Biographical / Historical:
Photographer; Kentfield, Calif.; b. 1911; d. April 1, 1999. Known in the San Francisco Bay Area for her portraits of prominent local figures, many of whom were artists. She eventually expanded her scope beyond Northern California to included artists in the Los Angeles region as well. These images were widely reproduced in books and in exhibitions and in many cases became the portraits by which the individuals were best known. Among her subjects were Ed Ruscha, Robert Graham, Peter Voulkos, Joan Brown, Isamu Noguchi, Jay DeFeo, Wayne Thiebaud, Imogen Cunningham, and Richard Diebenkorn. Several exhibitions were devoted to the photographs as independent works of art, an acknowledgement of their pictorial qualities as well as their value as documents.
Provenance:
Donated 1976-1992 by Mimi Jacobs. Additional photos, many of them duplicates of previous donations, were donated in 1999 by Leslie Fleming, Jacobs' daughter, for the Estate.

An interview of Joan Brown conducted 1975 July 1-September 9, by Paul Karlstrom, for the Archives of American Art.
Brown speaks of her family background, childhood, and Catholic education; the influence of Egyptian art, Francis Bacon, Willem De Kooning, and others; her instructors at the California School of Fine Arts including Dorr Bothwell and Elmer Nelson Bischoff; her trips to Europe; abstract expressionism, figurative painting, funk art and regionalism; San Francisco's painters, poets and musicians in the late 1950s; women as professional artists; and her imagery. She recalls Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner, Jay DeFeo, Wally Hedrick, George Herms, Edward Kienholz, Michael McClure, Manuel Neri, George W. Staempfli, and others.

The records of the B. R. Kornblatt Gallery of Baltimore, Md. and Washington, D.C. measure 4.1 linear feet and date from 1971 to 1992. The collection consists primarily of artists' files along with a few exhibition files and sales records.
Exhibition files are found for the Chicago International Art Exposition (1983-1988), the International Sculpture '90 (1990) exhibition, and exhibitions of African art. Artists' files contain correspondence, photographs and slides, resumes, and financial and printed material for numerous artists associated with the gallery or of interest to the gallery, including Mel Chin, Jerry Clapsaddle, Gene Davis, John Ferguson, Wolf Kahn, Willem de Looper, Helen Frankenthaler, Ronnie Landfield, Manuel Neri, Sol LeWitt, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Karl Rosenberg, Amalie Rothschild, Frank Stella, Michael Todd, John Van Alstine, and others. Biographical / Historical:
Barbara R. Kornblatt established the B. R. Kornblatt Gallery in 1975 on 326 North Charles Street in Baltimore, Maryland. The gallery specialized in American painting, sculpture, and works on paper. In 1980, Kornblatt moved the gallery to 406 Seventh Street, N.W. in Washington, D. C. where it became the mainstay of downtown commercial art galleries. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the gallery began feeling the effects of the economic recession, and then suffered a fire in the building. Kornblatt closed the gallery in 1991.
