This accession consists of outreach records produced by the Constituent Outreach subgroup of the Community and Constituent Services Department. Constituent Outreach is responsible for the programs and services developed specifically to address the needs and concerns of the National Museum of the American Indian's (NMAI) Native constituencies. This accession consists of materials related to the development, research, and production of exhibitions at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), both at the Mall museum site and at the George Gustav Heye Center (GGHC) in New York, New York. Exhibitions covered include "The Art of Being Kuna: Layers of Meaning Among the Kuna of Panama;" "Woven by the Grandmothers: Nineteenth Century Navajo Textiles from the National Museum of the American Indian" (working title: "Woven from Life: Navajo Textiles"); "Spirit Capture: Native Americans and the Photographic Image" (working title: "Photo Masterworks"); "To Honor and Comfort: Native Quilting Traditions;" "Agayuliyararput (Our Way of Making Prayer): The Living Tradition of Yup'ik Masks;" "All Roads Are Good: Native Voices on Life and Culture;" "Stories of the People" (also know as A&I Exhibit); "Reservation X: The Power of Place;" "Our Universes: Traditional Knowledge Shapes Our World;" "Our Peoples: Giving Voice to Our Histories;" and "Our Lives: Contemporary Life and Identities." Also covered are workshops conducted related to the exhibition, "Woven by the Grandmothers: Nineteenth Century Navajo Textiles from the National Museum of the American Indian;" reports and presentations of exhibitions given to the Senior Management Group of NMAI; and materials related to the Exhibition Master Plan (EMP). This accession consists of records which document the research, planning, and execution of the traveling exhibition, "Native Words, Native Warriors," which honors and documents the role of Native American servicemen who used their indigenous languages on behalf of the United States military during World War I and World War II. This traveling exhibition was a collaborative effort between the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and will be on tour from 2006-2011. NMAI staff represented in this collection include exhibition curator, George P. Horse Capture; researcher, Tim Jones; Keevin Lewis; and Katherine Krile. This accession consists of records which document the work of the Training Unit in the creation and implementation of training programs for the Native American community and related organizations. Areas of training include the care of Native American collections; the creation and management of tribal archives; exhibition planning, fabrication, and management; marketing Native arts; planning and managing American Indian cultural programs; starting a tribal museum; leadership; repatriation; fundraising; Native American languages; and other related areas. Also included are materials related to professionals visiting the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) to study and use NMAI collections for research purposes and to participate in professional development activities. Staff represented includes Karen Coody Cooper, Alyce Sadongei, and Jill Norwood.

Some records date from when the office was known as the Smithsonian Institution, Office of Community Services, Museum Training Program. Additionally some records date from before the creation of NMAI and were created by Native American Museums Training Programs (1977-1981) and the Native American Museums Programs (1981-1989) both part of the Smithsonian Institution, Office of Museum Programs. Lastly some records were created in collaboration between NMAI and the American Indian Museum Studies Program, Center for Museum Studies (which later became the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies).

Materials include correspondence; memoranda; workshop records including programs, agendas, participant lists, video, release forms, and evaluations; transcripts; images; reports; brochures; pamphlets; and clippings. Some materials are in electronic format.
