Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of visitor survey records which document feedback by visitors to the National Museum of the American Indian, George Gustav Heye Center. The surveys were conducted by the Education Department and cover comments regarding exhibitions, the Expressive Culture Series programs, and other aspects of the visitors' experience. Also included is a visitor comment book for the exhibition, "Pathways to Tradition: Indian Insights into Indian Worlds" as well as planning documents for the exhibition, "Ancestral Memories: A Tribute to Native American Survival" and the architectural program, "The Way of the People" which guided the design and construction of National Museum of the American Indian buildings. Materials include completed visitor survey forms, visitor comment books, and planning documents.

This accession primarily documents the Native American Training Program in which Jane R. Glaser was Training Program Manager and James A. Hanson served as Training Program Coordinator. The purpose of the program was to assist Native American communities with establishing tribal museums and to provide guidance in regard to museum management, exhibition development, collections conservation, educational outreach, and fundraising. The records also document the Psychological Studies Program and other museum program activities such as workshops, seminars, and surveys. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, and notes; loan information; brochures; and study reports.

This accession consists of the following publications from the National Museum of the American Indian: Kay WalkingStick: An American Artist, edited by Katherine Ash-Milby and David W. Penney; and Looking to the Future: The Life and Legacy of Senator Daniel K. Inouye.

Kay WalkingStick: An American Artist is the exhibition catalog for the exhibition of the same name. The book consist of essays by leading scholars and historians about the life of the Native American artist, Kay WalkingStick.

Looking to the Future: The Life and Legacy of Senator Daniel K. Inouye consists of the proceedings of a symposium held at the National Museum of the American Indian honoring Senator Daniel K. Inouye (1924-2012), one of the greatest advocates for Native people. Senator Inouye was Chairman and Vice Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and was one of the visionary founders of the National Museum of the American Indian. The speakers reflected on Senator Inouye's many contributions to the well-being of Native America, and looked to the future to build upon the foundation of the Senator's legacy to carry forward his work for the benefit of future generations of Native people.
