These records consist of video and audio elements for the video "Gems and Minerals: The Ultimate Rock Video." Created in 1989, this video was part of a home video series that was created for a general audience. The series, titled "Smithsonian Video Collection," was a collaborative venture with Eastman Kodak Co. and consisted of five programs available for purchase. Materials include Betacam tapes, Betacam SP tapes, U-Matic tapes, 3/4" tapes, VHS tapes, 1/4" audio soundtrack, 1" magnetic videotape, and 2" magnetic soundtrack. A copy of "Gems and Minerals" is available in the Reference Library (Resv18).

This accession consists of audiovisual materials associated with the Smithsonian Video Collection. The Smithsonian Video Collection was a joint venture with Eastman Kodak Company to provide videos featuring Smithsonian Institution collections and research to the general public. A total of six one-hour programs (only five are represented in this accession) were produced in 1989. "First Ladies" documents the First Ladies of the White House and their unique roles as well as the National Museum of American History's collection of First Ladies' gowns, accessories, and furnishings. "Gems and Minerals: The Ultimate Rock Video" features the gems and minerals collection at the National Museum of Natural History. "National Zoo: The Zoo Behind the Zoo" provides a tour of the National Zoological Park and its Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia and visits experts who lead the fight to save species from extinction. "Creatures Great and Small" features dinosaurs and insects and is composed of new footage as well as footage from older films. "Flying Machines" documents the history of flight and features the National Air and Space Museum. Materials include a master, a protection master, several dub masters, and other videotapes.

A total of six one-hour programs were produced in 1989. "Supertour" was hosted by Dudley Moore and tours 14 SI museums with commentary by museum directors and curators regarding their collections. "First Ladies" documents the First Ladies of the White House and their unique roles as well as SI's collection of First Ladies' gowns, accessories, and furnishings. "Gems and Minerals: The Ultimate Rock Video" features the gems and minerals collection at the National Museum of Natural History. "National Zoo: The Zoo Behind the Zoo" provides a tour of the National Zoological Park and its Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia and visits experts who lead the fight to save species from extinction. "Creatures Great and Small" features dinosaurs and insects and is composed of new footage as well as footage from older films. "Flying Machines" documents the history of flight and features the National Air and Space Museum (Not documented in this accession). Materials include original footage, audiotapes, voice-overs, dubs, and final productions. .

This accession consists of laserdiscs from the Smithsonian Laserdisc Collection. The Smithsonian Laserdisc Collection tells the stories behind the Smithsonian Institution's greatest art, history, and science collections, and introduces the curators of its unique possessions and hidden treasures. Titles from the Collection in this accession include "Dinosaurs: Fantastic Creatures That Ruled the Earth;" "Insects: The Little Things That Run the World;" "National Zoo: The Zoo Behind the Zoo;" "Gems and Minerals: The Ultimate Rock Video;" and "First Ladies: Symbols for a Nation." All titles are approximately 60 minutes long and were released on laserdisc in 1989. Some titles were later reformatted and released as part of the Smithsonian Video Collection.

"Dinosaurs: Fantastic Creatures That Ruled the Earth" is narrated by James Whitmore and compares the dinosaurs of the movies to the real story as told by scientists. The program features an excavation in progress and the National Museum of Natural History, Hall of Paleontology. "Insects: The Little Things That Run the World" is narrated by James Earl Jones and demonstrates the stunning ways insects have evolved and adapted to survive for eons while so many other animals have become extinct, and why scientists consider insects to be the most successful living organism on earth. The program features the National Museum of Natural History, Insect Zoo as well as the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the National Zoological Park. "National Zoo: The Zoo Behind the Zoo" takes viewers on a magical tour of the Smithsonian Institution's living animal collection and focuses on scientific study and conservation. The program features the National Zoological Park. "Gems and Minerals: The Ultimate Rock Video" takes viewers behind the scenes to the spectacular gem and mineral collection. The program features the National Museum of Natural History, Gem and Mineral Hall. "First Ladies: Symbols for a Nation" allows viewers to learn what it is really like to be a First Lady. The program features Nancy Reagan, Rosalynn Carter, Lady Bird Johnson, and Julie Nixon Eisenhower as well as the National Museum of American History, Hall of First Ladies.
