Examining the patterns of the evolution of mode of development
Description:
Can living things re-acquire characteristics that they once lost? Some species of slipper snails may have re-evolved a free-living larval stage after losing it three million years ago to development that occurs in an egg capsule. Through a grant from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Rachel Collin, from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, is studying what leads to the "evolutionary potential" to reacquire features and her work will provide new insight into the process of evolution. Video and edition by: Richard Pierce Collin Lab Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute 2011 Research in the Collin Lab focuses on the evolution of life histories and development of marine invertebrates. Our current work, supported by the US National Science Foundation, uses marine slipper limpets (Calyptraeidae) to try to understand the evolutionary loss and possible reacquisition of feeding larvae. The Collin Lab is located in Panama City, Panama, at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Naos Marine Laboratories, but our field work takes us to various other countries in the Americas. We hope that the videos on this YouTube channel give you an introduction to the faces in the Collin Lab, as well as a taste of the kinds of projects we are working on.

Blackbird Neophobia Study - Experiment
Description:
Resident blackbirds, such as grackles, cowbirds, and red-wings and Brewer's in California; were compared to migratory species, such as rusty and tricolored blackbirds, and Brewer's in Mississippi to see how they reacted to change in their environment. To test the birds' fear response, seed was placed on the ground in a variety of habitats. This clip is the experient (see other video for control). Blue plastic windmills have been placed to surround the food. The birds take much longer to feed although they are quite aware of the food. They are reluctant to pass by the objects to get to it and spend less time feeding.

Harvest of Hope: 9 Closing Comments by Kevin Gover
Description:
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, this timely and insightful forum moderated by Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian Director Kevin Gover (Pawnee/Comanche) focuses on topical issues of reconciliation and highlights national apologies made to Native peoples. The symposium covers the eloquent apology issued in June 2008 by the Canadian government for the abuse and cultural loss suffered by Aboriginal peoples in Canada's residential schools. It includes a presentation on the Native American Apology Resolution recently passed in the United States Senate as well as an examination of reconciliation efforts in Guatemala. A wrap-up speaker considers the issues involved in apologies and reconciliation processes in a broad scope. Concluding with panel discussion and questions from the audience, Harvest of Hope seeks a deeper, more inclusive understanding of our national narratives and the experiences of the Native peoples of the Americas. In Part 9, Kevin Gover gives closing comments and remarks. This symposium took place in the Rasmuson Theater of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC on November 13, 2008.

Video Title:
5. A.M. Q&A - (Re)Presenting America: The Evolution of Culturally Specific Museums
Description:
The National Museum of the American Latino Commission's report recommending the establishment of a Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino prompts debate concerning the value of "ethnic" or "culturally specific" museums. Thoughtful people ask whether the proliferation of museums dedicated to particular experiences or cultures contributes to the "balkanization" of the United States. Others observe that traditional museums have not represented our country's people and their achievements as fully as they should be. Ethnic/culturally specific museums, they note, provide different portals into what it means to be an American, and their programs provide depth and fullness of perspective, enriching our national narrative. These are serious questions that the Smithsonian seeks to address in a comprehensive, insightful way. By presenting various facets of the existence and practices of "ethnic/culturally specific" museums at the Smithsonian and elsewhere, this special symposium advances a vital discussion of a challenging subject. It provides an important step toward understanding the history of museums in matters of race, the development of "ethnic/culturally specific" museums, and the development of a cogent philosophy on these museums. #CulturalMuseums
