In his music as well as his art, he is eclectic, extemporaneous, poetic and extracts beauty from hardship and humble items.

Video Title:
Conservation & Exhibition Planning: Material Testing for Design, Display, & Packing - Session 3
Description:
This two-day conference is an opportunity for exhibition designers, mount makers, registrars, collection managers, conservators, and scientists to explore the challenges of how materials are selected for use with art objects. The planning for appropriate collection care before, during, and after display is dependent on accessing reliable information about the materials we use. The production of fabrics, painted surfaces, mounts, foams, and board materials facilitate the creative display of art objects. Understanding how these materials will react with artworks over time is a fundamentally challenging, but necessary, undertaking. This conference will convey practical considerations that facilitate and benefit collection care in museum exhibition workflows, and how they impact staff across departments. Presentations will focus on designing exhibitions and fabricating display furniture; strategic approaches to collection care during the exhibition implementation process; designing storage environments; conservation work spaces; interpretation and sharing of analytical results from Oddy testing and alternatives to the Oddy test; and monitoring how materials change over time. Please visit the education tab of the American Institute for Conservation's website. To view the program schedule for this conference please visit the program page on the AIC website.

Body of Devotion: The Cosmic Buddha in 3D
Description:
Body of Devotion: The Cosmic Buddha in 3D January 30–December 2016 Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Like all Buddhas (fully enlightened beings), the Cosmic Buddha, a life-size limestone figure of Vairochana, is wrapped in the simple robe of a monk. What makes this sixth-century Chinese object exceptional are the detailed narrative scenes that cover its surface, representing moments in the life of the Historical Buddha as well as the Realms of Existence, a symbolic map of the Buddhist world. With help from the Smithsonian’s Digitization Program Office, the Cosmic Buddha also exists as a 3D model, enabling scholars to study the work as never before and providing worldwide access to this masterpiece of Buddhist sculpture. Body of Devotion is an interactive installation that explores not only the work itself, but also the evolving means and methods of studying sculpture, from rubbings and photographs to the technological possibilities of today.

Description:
A Sixteenth-Century Shiraz Masterpiece: Chester Beatty’s Ruzbihan Qur’an Elaine Wright, Chester Beatty Library, Dublin SYMPOSIUM The Word Illuminated: Form and Function of Qur’anic Manuscripts Thursday–Saturday, December 1–3 Turkish Embassy and Ripley Center Lecture Hall Costly paper, finely tooled bindings, special scripts, and intricate illumination are among the characteristics that distinguish the manuscripts in The Art of the Qur’an. In this symposium, investigate the materiality of luxury copies of the Qur’an made between the eighth and the seventeenth century from Herat to Istanbul. Also learn about the complex and layered significance these Qur’ans acquired as they changed ownership. Speakers examine the volumes in their historical, cultural, and artistic contexts and discuss their use as potent symbols of piety and political and religious authority. The symposium is organized in conjunction with the exhibition The Art of the Qur’an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts and is made possible in part through the support of the El-Hibri Foundation.

Ragnar Kjartansson's "S.S. Hangover" - Hirshhorn Museum
Description:
Conceived by Ragnar Kjartansson for the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, S.S. Hangover is a “kinetic sound-sculpture” set against the backdrop of the arcaded canal adjacent to the Venetian Arsenale. There, for four hours each day, a vintage fishing boat sailed back and forth between the docks; on board was a uniformed brass sextet performing an original piece by composer Kjartan Sveinsson. "S.S. Hangover" (2013–2014), the two-channel video, was acquired by the Hirshhorn Museum. “Ragnar Kjartansson” (Oct. 14 2016- Jan. 8, 2017) Courtesy of the artist, Luhring Augustine, New York and i8 Gallery, Reykjavík. The exhibition is conceived and organized by the Barbican, London, in association with the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC.
