Ruth Esherick Bascom and Mansfield Bascom speak about Wharton Esherick's family, his education, his "organic" life in Paoli, Pennsylvania, and his efforts to support himself through the sale of his paintings, furniture and sculpture. They discuss Esherick's work, its stylistic development, and changes in his prints and furniture, materials; clients such as the Hedgrow Theater, The Fischer family, Marjorie Content, Curtis Bok; Esherick's studio and his workshop; Esherick's relationship with Miriam Phillips and some of the clients she brought him; and contacts in New York City.

Ruth Esherick Bascom from Paoli, Pennsylvania, is the daughter of Wharton Esherick (1887-1970), who was a sculptor, painter, printmaker, and furniture maker from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bascom is married to Mansfield Bascom.

The personal papers of Charles Lang Freer, the industrialist and art collector who founded the Freer Gallery of Art. The papers include correspondence, diaries, art inventories, scrapbooks of clippings on James McNeil Whistler and other press clippings, financial material, architectural drawings, and photographs.

Correspondence, circa 1860-1921, includes Freer's correspondence, 1876-1920, with artists, dealers, collectors, museums, and public figures; letterpress books contain copies of Freer's outgoing letters, 1892-1910; correspondence collected by Freer of James McNeill Whistler, and his wife Beatrix, 186?-1909, with Lady Colin Campbell, Thomas R. Way, Alexander Reid, Whistler's mother, Mrs. George W. Whistler, and others; correspondence of Whistler collector Richard A. Canfield, 1904-1913, regarding works in Canfield's collection; and correspondence of Freer's assistant, Katharine Nash Rhoades, 1920-1921, soliciting Freer's letters from his associates, and regarding the settlement of his estate.

Also included are twenty-nine pocket diaries, 1889-1890, 1892-1898, 1900-1919, recording daily activities, people and places visited, observations, and comments; a diary kept by Freer's caretaker, Joseph Stephens Warring, recording daily activities at Freer's Detroit home, 1907-1910. Inventories, n.d. and 1901-1921, of American, European, and Asian art in Freer's collection, often including provenance information; vouchers, 1884-1919, documenting his purchases; five volumes of scrapbooks of clippings on James McNeill Whistler, 1888-1931, labeled "Various," "Peacock Room," "Death, etc.," "Paris, etc.," and "Boston...London" ; three volumes of newsclippings, 1900-1930, concerning Freer and the opening of the Freer Gallery of Art.

Correspondence regarding Freer's gift and bequest to the Smithsonian Institution, 1902-1916; and photographs, ca. 1880-1930, of Freer, including portraits by Alvin Langdon Coburn and Edward Steichen, Freer with others, Freer in Cairo, China and Japan, Freer's death mask, and his memorial service, Kyoto, 1930; photographs of artists and others, including Thomas Dewing, Ernest Fenollosa, Katharine Rhoades taken by Alfred Stieglitz, Rosalind B. Philip, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Abbott H. Thayer, Dwight Tryon, and Whistler; and photographs relating to Whistler, including art works depicting him, grave and memorial monuments, works of art, the Peacock Room, and Whistler's memorial exhibition at the Copley Society.

Papers include a list of Bowlin's sculptures and biographical notes; and a draft of a speech delivered by Bowlin on October 12, 1956 at the unveiling of his statue of Andrew Johnson, a program for the dedication of a statue, and remarks by Bowlin from July 1961. Also found are two pages of a guest register of signatures with comments on Bowlin's sculpture, Pleased Boy; four photographs of Bowlin with his work and with family; and printed material including news clippings about Bowlin and his work.

Tennessee sculptor and painter Edgar W. Bowlin (1923-2001), was known for his sculptures and oil paintings of United States presidents including Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, and liturgical paintings in Tennessee area churches.

The collection comprises biographical materials consisting of student records from the Art Institute of Chicago, planners and address books, resumes, and unidentified material on electronic discs; correspondence with galleries regarding exhibitions, with friends including Kathy Kucera, and others; writings including drafts and notes for articles, and poems by Aubin; exhibition files containing planning documents, promotional material, and video recordings for Send a Postcard to Barbara (1980), Women's Day (2004, 2005), and a retrospective of Aubin's work at Elmhurst College (2008); professional files consisting of 4+ Decades of Art project material, membership records, Candidate for Professor binders, letters of support from colleagues, and a files for other professional activities; printed materials mainly featuring Aubin and her artwork; scrapbooks consisting of printed materials, photographs, and other material relating to Aubin's exhibitions and career; artwork consisting of collages by Aubin, prints, and vintage paintings; and photographic materials with slides, photographic prints, and negatives of Aubin, personal snapshots of friends and family, exhibitions, and works of art.

Biographical / Historical:

Barbara Aubin (1928-2014) was a painter, teacher, and curator in Chicago, Illinois known for her work with postcard art and collage.

In 1949, she received a B.A. in sociology from Carleton College in M.N. She went on to earn both a B.A. and M.A. in art education from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in 1954 and 1955 respectively. After graduation, she traveled to France and Italy on the George D. Brown Foreign Travel Fellowship in 1955-1956 and to Haiti for a Fulbright Fellowship in 1958-1960.

Aubin taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1956-1958 and 1960-1967, Chicago State University in 1971-1991, and was a visiting artist at St. Louis Community College in 1980-1981. She was a member of the Chicago Artists Coalition, Chicago Society of Artists, and was a founder of the Chicago Women's Caucus for Art.

Provenance:

The Barbara Aubin papers were donated in 2016 by the Barbara Aubin estate via Amie Hyman, executor and in 2023 by the Union League Club of Chicago via Mark Tunney, General Manager, and Jane Stevens, trustee.

The papers document the collecting activities of the Bergmans through a collection of files on artists including Joseph Cornell, Jim Nutt, and Wilfredo Lam, and others including art dealers Julien and Jean Levy, and ballerina Tamara Toumanova.

Scope and Contents:

The papers of Chicago art collectors Edwin and Lindy Bergman measure 1.6 linear feet and date from 1951 to 2002. The collection includes documents filed by subject/name. Files may include both personal and business correspondence; personal business records such as price lists, inventories, and invoices; clippings, exhibition announcements, exhibition catalogs, and other printed material; and photographs of artists and their artwork. Also found is a video recording of an interview of Edwin and Lindy Bergman, August 24, 1984, produced by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

A significant portion of the series relates to Joseph Cornell, and material includes general correspondence, correspondence from Betty Benton and Anthony Peluso, clippings, and exhibition announcements and catalogs. Also represented are artists Jim Nutt and Wilfredo Lam, art dealers Julian and Jean Levy, and ballerina Tamara Toumanova. There are also files on art galleries including the Museum of Modern Art, Sidney Janis Gallery, and Galerie du Dragon in Paris.

Biographical / Historical:

Chicago, Illinois, art collectors Edwin Bergman (1917-1986) and Lindy (Betty Jane) Bergman (1918-2014) shared a particular interest in surrealist art and over a sixty year period assembled a major art collection which included some of Joseph Cornell's most famous works. The Bergmans began collecting art in the 1950s, and established the Bergman Gallery, designed as both a studio for undergraduates and an exhibition center. In 1982 they also established the Edwin and Lindy Bergman Joseph Cornell Gallery at the Art Institute of Chicago. Edwin Bergman was a founder and past president of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
