The papers document the collecting activities of the Bergmans through a collection of files on artists including Joseph Cornell, Jim Nutt, and Wilfredo Lam, and others including art dealers Julien and Jean Levy, and ballerina Tamara Toumanova.
Scope and Contents:
The papers of Chicago art collectors Edwin and Lindy Bergman measure 1.6 linear feet and date from 1951 to 2002. The collection includes documents filed by subject/name. Files may include both personal and business correspondence; personal business records such as price lists, inventories, and invoices; clippings, exhibition announcements, exhibition catalogs, and other printed material; and photographs of artists and their artwork. Also found is a video recording of an interview of Edwin and Lindy Bergman, August 24, 1984, produced by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

A significant portion of the series relates to Joseph Cornell, and material includes general correspondence, correspondence from Betty Benton and Anthony Peluso, clippings, and exhibition announcements and catalogs. Also represented are artists Jim Nutt and Wilfredo Lam, art dealers Julian and Jean Levy, and ballerina Tamara Toumanova. There are also files on art galleries including the Museum of Modern Art, Sidney Janis Gallery, and Galerie du Dragon in Paris.

Biographical / Historical:
Chicago, Illinois, art collectors Edwin Bergman (1917-1986) and Lindy (Betty Jane) Bergman (1918-2014) shared a particular interest in surrealist art and over a sixty year period assembled a major art collection which included some of Joseph Cornell's most famous works. The Bergmans began collecting art in the 1950s, and established the Bergman Gallery, designed as both a studio for undergraduates and an exhibition center. In 1982 they also established the Edwin and Lindy Bergman Joseph Cornell Gallery at the Art Institute of Chicago. Edwin Bergman was a founder and past president of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

Writings consist of notes, essays, articles, and book chapters written by Coe on collecting, Native American art, European art, and museology. Exhibition material, most notably from Lost and Found Traditions: Native American Art 1965-1985 (1985-1986), document Coe's involvement with various exhibitions as curator, consultant, and catalogue contributor. Records from Coe's time at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (1959-1982) include administrative papers and correspondence, some exhibition material, and papers related to Coe's resignation as director in 1982. Coe's association and membership records document his affiliation with various collections, government institutions, professional societies, and non-profit organizations. Coe's collector files consist of papers related to the purchase of Native American and European art for both himself and on behalf of Henry Bloch, as well as art loans from Coe's personal collection and tours held at his home. Personal business records consist of correspondence, receipts, bills, and tax information documenting Coe's various endeavors as an art consultant and valuator, guest speaker, and writer. Printed material includes clippings on a variety of topics, and ephemera from his travels to different communities, museums, galleries, and historic sites.

Biographical / Historical:
Ralph T. Coe (1929-2010) was a museum director, art collector, writer, and art historian who primarily focused on contemporary Native American art, but also worked on European impressionism to some extent. He was born in Cleveland Ohio, received his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1953, and then his M.A. from Yale University in 1957. His first position out of Yale was as an assistant curator for the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Coe then worked for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri from 1959 to 1982.

In 1982 Coe was officially hired by the National Museum of American Art as a senior visiting scholar, working on an acquisition/exhibition project. This project ultimately produced the traveling exhibition, Lost and Found Traditions: Native American Art 1965-1985 (1985-1986), and established the largest collection of Native American contemporary art at the time. The project was funded by The American Federation of Arts (AFA) in conjunction with the American Can Corporation. It first opened at the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, in 1986, and then traveled for two years under the auspices of the AFA. The collection was showcased at the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, and the Kulturhuset, Stockholm, Sweden, among others. Coe also published a book-length catalogue for the exhibit.

As an independent art historian and writer, Coe published essays, articles, and book chapters. Coe worked closely with the collections of Eugene V. Thaw and Henry Bloch, and functioned as both a committee and trustee member for several organizations including the American Federation of Arts, Association of Art Museum Directors, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Art Advisory Panel, the American Council for Cultural Policy, the Archives of American Art, and the Southwestern Association on Indian Affairs.

As an art collector, Coe consistently traveled throughout North America meeting with Native American artists and cultural representatives. Coe established a wide range of relationships with Native American communities from coast to coast as he collected their art and engaged with their cultural practices.

The papers also document the life of artist Stanton MacDonald-Wright through correspondence with Stussy; manuscripts and other writings; lectures and discussions with Stussy; clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, and other printed material; and photographs of MacDonald-Wright.

Biographical material consists of Stussy family history, material on Fred Stussy, Stussy's Boy Scout scrapbook, and an obituary.

Correspondence consists of letters from Stussy to his wife, Maxine Kim Stussy, with various museums and institutions such as the United States Embassy in Turkey, and a collection of postcards. Also included are correspondence between Stussy and Stanton MacDonald-Wright.

Writings consist of a biography and general notes on Stanton MacDonald-Wright, articles on art, manuscripts for screenplays written by Stussy, poetry, and miscellaneous notes. Also included are some of Stussy's diaries from the 1940s and 1980s.

Personal business records consist of mainly inventory and price lists, some general account records, general invoices and related correspondence, and invoices from the Esther Robles Gallery.

Professional activity material consists of resumes, academic evaluations and promotions from his time as a professor at UCLA, awards, screenplay material, and some exhibition files. Also included are a series of audio cassette interviews between Stussy and Stanton MacDonald-Wright, an audio cassette lecture by MacDonald-Wright, and a video cassette on "The Ideals of Occidental Composition."

Printed material consists of clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, published articles by Stussy, a book on Stussy's art, and a book featuring some of Stussy's illustrations.

Artwork consists of sketches done by students for some of Stussy's courses in 1948, sketches by Stussy, and collages.

Photographic material consists of photographs of Stussy, Stanton MacDonald-Wright, and of Stussy's artwork. There is a large collection of slides of Stussy's artwork and of tattoo art. Also included are four 8mm film reels of photographs of primarily tattoo art.

Catalog of artwork is a catalog put together by the Jan Stussy Foundation. The catalog contains a listing of Stussy's works consisting of a general list of works, photographs of artwork on index cards, and catalog worksheets with titles and other pertinent information related to each piece.

The collection is arranged into nine series.

Series 5: Professional Activity Files, 1950-1990 (0.6 linear feet; Boxes 2-3)

Series 6: Printed Material, 1940-2016 (1.0 linear feet; Boxes 3, 9-10)

Biographical / Historical:
Jan Stussy (1921-1990) was a painter and educator primarily in Los Angeles, California. Stussy was born in 1921 in Benton County, Missouri, and he taught at UCLA. Stussy studied with Stanton MacDonald-Wright and remained life-long friends with him. Stussy was married to artist Maxine Kim Stussy.

Stanton MacDonald-Wright (1890-1973) was a modern American artist and co-founder of Syncromism, an early abstract, color-based mode of painting, which was the first American avant-garde art movement to receive international attention. MacDonald-Wright was born in Charlotteville, Virginia in 1890. He moved to Los Angeles in 1918 where he would serve as director of the Southern California division of the Works Project Administration Federal Art Project from 1935 to 1943. He also taught art at UCLA.
Provenance:
The Jan Stussy papers were donated to the archives between 1976-1985 by Jan Stussy and in 2022 by Belinda Franekl, Maxine Stussy's stepdaughter.
