Smithsonian Institution Castle: Cloisters
Description:
Originally, open walkways patterned after medieval cloisters ran along the north sides of both the West Range and East Range. Smithsonian planner Robert Dale Owen believed the cloister was appropriate for the free public college that he hoped the Smithsonian Institution would become. But the open cloisters proved impractical and were closed with the installation of windows shortly after building's construction. In the 1870s, sculpture was moved into the cloisters from the West Range's central space to make room for ethnological exhibits primarily focused on North American Indians.

Smithsonian Institution Castle: James Renwick
Description:
Architect James Renwick, Jr. was twenty-eight years old when he won the design competition for the Smithsonian Institution Building. Renwick submitted two of the thirteen entries. Not formally trained as an architect, Renwick graduated from Columbia University and worked as an engineer for the Erie railway and as an assistant engineer on the Croton aqueduct before he won a competition in 1843 to design Grace Church in New York City. After his work on the Castle, Renwick went on to design a number of significant buildings, including the original building for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, now the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.

Video Title:
Smithsonian Institution Castle: The Commons
Description:
The grand, well-lit Commons resembles the chapels of English academic architecture, but the space was always intended for secular use. The room, known as the West Wing for most of its history, has seen many other uses since its initial service as a library. In 1871, one of the earliest meetings of the National Academy of Sciences was held here. Mineralogical specimens, exhibits from the 1876 Centennial Exposition, and marine invertebrate specimens all found a home at one time or another in this space before the entire west end and main hall were closed for renovation from 1914 to 1916. When the Commons reopened to the public, graphic arts exhibits were on view there. Those exhibits were transferred, in 1963, to the Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History, Behring Center. In subsequent decades, a restaurant was housed in the Commons. Today, the exhibits in this room provide a sampler of objects from Smithsonian collections.

Video Title:
Smithsonian Institution Castle: Renwick Model
Description:
This original model of the Castle was found here in an upstairs attic sometime in the late 1960s or early 70s. The medieval revival building style was chosen for the building because it was associated with the architecture of English colleges, and education was - and remains - at the heart of the Smithsonian mission. The style was also thought to express the practical, flexible, independent American character. Medieval forms and details from different periods, such as double pointed-arch windows within a single rounded-headed arch, were combined for the picturesque effect popular at the time. Adding to the picturesque or visually pleasing quality are the building's asymmetry, underscored by the nine towers - all different - and the red sandstone facade. To cut costs, the main part of the building was reduced from three to two stories and one 12-story front tower out of the two originally proposed was eliminated between the creation of the model and the building's construction.

Video Title:
Smithsonian Institution Castle: Schermer Hall
Description:
Rooms in the Castle have changed in form, function and name over the years. During the fireproofing of the West Range, the Gothic-style columns were replaced. The new Romanesque architectural interpretation is evident in the columns and capitals in Schermer Hall dating from the 1880s, a time when the Aesthetic style, which favored plain materials and surfaces, emerged. The Aesthetic style was a reaction to the perceived opulence and over-ornamentation of the Rococo Revival style popular in the decorative arts of the time. The west end of the building includes the West Range, re-named Schermer Hall in the mid-1990s, and the Commons beyond it. Planners envisioned the entire west end as an art gallery, which accounts for the high ceilings and abundant natural light in both Schermer Hall and the Commons. The plan for an art gallery in the west end of the building, however, was never realized. Instead, the spaces were used as a reading room and a library, which was installed in the Commons. After the library holdings were transferred to the Library of Congress in 1866, the rooms were converted into exhibition halls. Over the more than 100 years that followed, a variety of exhibits were on view in those rooms. From the 1960s on, the space now known as Schermer Hall has served primarily as a communal gathering space. It was named Schermer Hall in recognition of Lloyd G. and Betty A. Schermer, who established an endowment in 1994 through the Smithsonian Fund for the Future, and are founding members of the Smithsonian Legacy Society. Lloyd Schermer is an honorary member and past chair of the Smithsonian National Board. The Smithsonian Institution is a public/private partnership that relies heavily on the generous support of individuals, corporations and foundations. The membership desk in the Great Hall can assist you in understanding how you, too, can support America's museum.

Smithsonian Institution Castle: James Smithson
Description:
James Smithson's legacy to the United States created the world's largest museum and research complex, yet he never visited this country during his lifetime. Almost as mysterious as his motives and intentions for the institution he founded was the man himself. The story of James Smithson's life is sketchy, but it is known that he was born in 1765, the illegitimate son of Hugh Smithson and Elizabeth Macie. After he earned a master of arts degree from Pembroke College, Oxford, he embarked on a life of scientific research, ultimately publishing 27 papers on chemistry, geology, and mineralogy. His topics ranged from a chemical analysis of calamines to an improved method of making coffee. James Smithson died in Genoa, Italy, in 1829, and the wealth he had inherited from his mother passed to his nephew. Because his nephew died without heirs, the estate went to the U.S. government, as Smithson had specified in his will. When the Genoa cemetery was to be relocated in 1904, Alexander Graham Bell, then a Regent of the Smithsonian, traveled to Italy to retrieve Smithson's remains and bring them here to rest, in a room specially reconfigured in the building where the Smithsonian Institution had its beginning.

Smithsonian Institution Castle: National Zoo Beginnings
Description:
The Smithsonian's National Zoo had its modest beginnings in the south yard of the Castle. A collection of live animals was assembled for taxidermists to study while preserving and posing specimens for the natural history exhibits of the National Museum, then housed in the Castle. By 1887, several thousand people a day visited the small exhibit, which consisted of a bear, four deer, several birds of prey, and a pair of bison from the American West.

Smithsonian Institution Castle: The Great Hall
Description:
Since the Castle first opened to the public, the Great Hall has welcomed legions of visitors to the Smithsonian Institution. The hall initially served as the National Museum and displayed natural history specimens and replicas, such as this one of a hadrosaurus. Because of the large crowds drawn by the exhibits and a growing need for more collections space, a building to house the United States National Museum was constructed next door to the Castle. Now named the Arts and Industries Building, it opened in 1881 with many of the natural history exhibits on view that had been moved from the Great Hall. The Smithsonian's continued growth resulted in the creation, in 1911, of the new National Museum, now the National Museum of Natural History. All natural history collections were moved there, and the upper galleries in the Castle's main hall (now known as the "Great Hall"), where curators had worked, were demolished. The hall was refitted to hold a library, exhibits, and special events, such as the 1927 Conference on the Future of the Smithsonian Institution. Since the 1940s, exhibits in the Great Hall have described the ever-growing list of Smithsonian museums and research programs. The hall you see today - a postmodern interpretation of Victorian decor - dates from the 1980s, when the Great Hall was renovated to better serve as an enhanced Visitor Information and Associates' Reception Center.

Smithsonian Institute for Biodiversity Genomics Launch Event 12/12/2014
Description:
In association with the publication of a Special Issue of Science on Avian Genomics, The Grand Challenges Consortia are celebrating the launch of the new Smithsonian Institute for Biodiversity Genomics (BioGenomics). Genomics, the comprehensive study of an organism’s genome, unifies and empowers all of the biological sciences. The integration of genomic science, methods, tools, applications, and findings has already had an immeasurable impact on all corners of scientific research in biodiversity and will lead to new discoveries that will benefit current and future human societies. With the launch of BioGenomics the Smithsonian Institution will provide the high-profile, multi-disciplinary scholarship, leadership, collaborative spirit, and logistical support necessary to enhance our understanding of the natural world through genomics. The excellence, vision, and global reach of the Smithsonian is represented by the collections and field-based initiatives of our museums and research centers, including the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), the National Zoo (NZP), the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI), the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), and the Museum Conservation Institute (MCI). Combining and coordinating our efforts in genomics will enable the Smithsonian, through synergistic opportunities, economies of scale, and partnerships to advance our knowledge and application of biodiversity genomics across all taxa in a multitude of both terrestrial and marine environments. The program will be lived webcast and archived on this site, and includes presentations on Avian Genomics by Dr. Erich Jarvis (Professor at Duke University), the Global Genome Initiative (GGI) by Dr. Jonathan Coddington (Director of GGI, National Museum of Natural History), and the Smithsonian Institute for Biodiversity Genomics by Dr. W. John Kress (Interim Under Secretary for Science).
