This photograph was taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while conducting field research in northern Sierra Leone within Bafodea Town, the capital of Wara Wara Bafodea Chiefdom, while on an Art Historical and Anthropological Field Research from October of 1978 through July of 1980.

He holds his staff of office, given to him by the British during the colonial days. Every Sierra Leone chief had one. He is a Muslim, although his chiefdom is mixed traditionalist, Muslim and Christian." [Ottenberg field research notes, Limba Slides and Photographs, October 1978-July 1980].

Original title reads, "Decorated storage box belonging to the Chief in his house made by a man from Karasa, Fadagu are, Limba country. Showing the way it is standing from the floor. At times the blacksmith makes these boxes to stand on legs, but legs are not always used, or sometimes the box is placed on a table or a mud bench." Original title reads, "The Speaker, Pa Hamidu Kamara, of Wara Wara Bafodea Chiefdom, standing on the front porch of his home, more or less across the home of the chief. He is the number two leader in the chiefdom, always of a different clan than the chief (He is Kamara, the chief Mansaray). In back of him is a locally made hammock.
