Summary:
Portrait of a gentleman seated with his body facing forward, his gaze directed toward the viewer, and his right arm resting over the back of his chair. In his right hand he holds a book vertically in his lap, his right index finger inserted between the pages to mark his place in book. He has long sideburns, and he wears a black jacket, vest, and tie with white shirt adorned with a gold key pin on the front. He wears a gold watch chain that is draped across his vest to a watch pocket under the left lapel of his jacket. Attached to the chain is a red and gold pin. He is seated in a "fancy" chair painted by the artist.
