The painting shows the artist's friends and family in a variety of activities in a circus like setting with the words "Beauty Contest" written across the top. The artist painted herself in the upper left corner, next to Edna Kenton and Edward Steichen, who is photographing the activities. P.T. Barnum is standing on the lower right in a judge's box. On the lower left there is a band, and in the lower center there is a figure resembling Rudolph Valentino leading a white horse. In the background figures representing beauty contestants parade on a stage.
