Summary:
University of Maryland professor talks about a course in which history majors gain experience in oral history techniques; she teaches oral history as a technique or tool for historical research. She explains the basic elements needed for a successful oral history program, her experience working on an oral history project for the National Park Service, and the challenges of oral history work. A Howard University professor talks about the oral history course he teaches at Howard University; and explains the importance for establishing a purpose when creating oral histories and the difference between oral history and oral tradition. He also explains the Dunbar High School oral history project and its purpose to collect a social history of the high school and Washington, D.C.; understand the influence of Dunbar High School on Howard University; and determine the impact of black schools under a segregated system and under an integrated system. Question and answer session follow the presentations. Louise Hutchinson addresses questions during question and answer session. Moderator is Professor Frech from George Washington University.
