Title created by ACMA staff from title and interview location transcribed from physical asset.
The collection, Street Interviews, contains a series of interviews conducted with locals at various locations around Washington, D.C.'s Anacostia neighborhood between April 3 and July 27, 1972. The five areas of focus for the street interviews include housing, unemployment, education, crime, and drugs. Interviews were conducted by James Campbell with Vilma Beraroucci running the camera. Most of the interviews were transferred to VHS in August 1990.
Summary:
Interviewees speak about unemployment, and lack of quality and low income housing in Washington, D.C. One D.C. resident speaks about his experience working for D.C. Transit, transit fare increases, vandalism to transit cars, and training program for transit employees. A couple of men talk about big corporations taking control of low income housing and not taking care of the housing units. Their current housing complex is plagued by a flooded basement, rats, no hot water, and no heat; an inspector told them to go on a rent strike. The men think housing communities should be more cooperative with residents having a voice in what happens within the housing communities.
