Hirsch was an environmental activist and researcher. At the time of his death, he was working in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, in the Office of International Relations. He started and headed Federal GLOBE, an organization to support and advocate for, LGBT employees of the federal government.
Papers relating to Leonard Hirsch's work with GLOBE, an organization he founded to support and advocate for lesbian, gay, and bisexual employees of the federal government; also other papers relating to lesbian and gay issues, and personal papers. The collection includes correspondence, e-mail, publications, financial records, funeral memorabilia, photographs, and newsletters.
