Summary:
Isabel Barbosa de Salles is interviewed about growing up in Brazil, where she had a difficult life and was unable to finish high school because she had to earn money working as a housemaid. She movied to the U.S. in 1973 with a Brazilian diplomat's family to care for their child and home. Once in the U.S., Barbosa de Salles was able to learn English and have a car and apartment of her own. She discusses her strong involvement in the Brazilian community in D.C. and her plans to move back to Brazil, where she had already purchased a home. An English transcript of the interview is available for reference in the archives.
An interview of Isabel Barbosa de Salles, conducted in 1992 for the Black Mosaic exhibition. Black Mosaic was an exhibition exploring the immigration of people of African descent from Central and South America and the Caribbean to the Washington Metropolitan Area. The show was organized by the Anacostia Museum and held there from August 21, 1994 through August 7, 1995
