The Center for Anacostia Studies was the predecessor of the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum research department.
Summary:
Wilson de Paula is interviewed about growing up in Rio de Janeiro and the various times he moved to and visited the U.S. Born in 1945, de Paula was very close to his Barbadian grandparents and he became a professional cello player and a fan of samba music at the age of 14. de Paula first moved to D.C. in 1976 and found it to be much like what he'd seen on television, but returned to Brazil in 1978 to work for the Institute for Research of Black Cultures. He also published a book of poetry in 1978 entitled "White Verses, Black Poetry," which was used in University courses in the U.S. de Paula discusses the influence of U.S. culture and segregation on racism in Brazil and compares the political and cultural activities of Brazilians and Americans. An interview of Wilson de Paula, conducted 1991 September 12 for the Black Mosaic exhibition. Black Mosaic was an exhibition exploring the immigration of people of African descent from Central and South America and the Caribbean to the Washington Metropolitan Area. The show was organized by the Anacostia Museum and held there from August 21, 1994 through August 7, 1995
