The Center for Anacostia Studies was the predecessor of the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum research department.
Summary:
Rolando Roebuck is interviewed about his time in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, as well as his decision to move to Washington D.C. in 1974 when his wife came to study law at American University. Roebuxk recalls memories of his grandmother and church community in Puerto Rico, and his thoughts on what he considers a caste system in the Virgin Islands. Other topics of conversation niclude mixing and co-mingling with other races, both back home and in the U.S., and the ineffectiveness of the simple distinction between white and black in the U.S. as compared to the 20-30 categories of blackness based on complextion in Latin America. An interview of Rolando Roebuck, conducted for the Black Mosaic exhibition. Black Mosaic was an exhibition exploring the immigration of people of African descent from Central and South America and the Caribbean to the Washington Metropolitan Area. The show was organized by the Anacostia Museum and held there from August 21, 1994 through August 7, 1995
