The Sandford Greeting Card Company was started in 1907 by Mary Elizabeth Sandford, age 55, in Dansville, New York. Her three grown daughters (Ruth Sandford, Helen Sandford MacDowell, Georgiana Sandford Gilman) and her husband Frank eventually became involved, and Sandford's two sisters (Lillian F. Pease, Georgiana Prince) also started greeting card companies of their own. The three companies distributed each other's cards. The company went out of business in 1967. In addition to their business activities, family members participated in a number of the major events of the time, including the Temperance Movement, the Suffrage Movement, the 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia, the 1904 World's Fair, a cruise to see the Panama Canal, among other things.
The collection documents approximately 150 years in the lives of members of the Sandford Family and its greeting card business. Family members traveled, were educated, were very active and participated in organizations such as the Women's Christian Temperance Movement and the Red Cross. They also witnessed or participated in many important events that occurred during their lifetimes, including the Temperance Movement, the Women's Suffrage Movement, World's Fairs of 1876 and 1904, health spas, and the building of the Panama Canal. Photographs, letters and detailed diaries document these organizations and events. The 19th-century photographs include daguerreotypes, cartes-de-visite, and cabinet prints. The Sandford Greeting Card Company's business activities are well documented in design drawings, business correspondence, account books, financial records, advertising and marketing materials, and product samples.
