Shanks, an employee of Baltimore Gas and Electric for over 40 years, was a covered bridge enthusiast and collector. He set a goal of photographing every covered bridge in America. He died in 2010.
The collection is comprised of the results of Shanks's research on covered bridges, mostly in America but also including an album of photographs of covered bridges in Switzerland. Included are albums containing photographs of covered bridges, organized geographically; slides, also arranged geographically; postcards depicting covered bridges; maps and travel brochures; an 1876 guidebook to Baltimore; and newsletters on the subject of covered bridges.
