Notes:
A former child actor, George Sidney was a film director during the Golden Age of Hollywood film making (1927-1954). He spent the longest period of his career at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in the 1930s. He also produced and directed films for Columbia Pictures and Paramount Pictures. He was a president of the Director's Guild of America and an avid photographer. He was the recipient of three awards (Oscars) from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Summary:
Papers relating to George Sidney's career in film making and photography. The largest series is Series 1, which contains photographs by Sidney, in various sizes and formats, taken on film sets and in Hollywood homes, documenting the day-to-day activities involved in making a motion picture, including costume tests, screen tests, scouting for film locations, Hollywood parties, etc. Also included: scrapbooks documenting the vaudeville career of George Sidney's mother, the theater executive activities of Sidney's father Louis, and the career of his uncle (also named George Sidney), a well known comedian in Yiddish, in legitimate theater and later in films; business and personal papers, including correspondence, scripts, and the manuscript for Sidney's memoirs; and audiovisual materials.
Subjects include: Benny Goodman; a portrait of a young Ed Sullivan among the candid photographs; many others.
