Notes:
Born in Washington, D.C., Stokes served in the Army, then embarked on an academic career, teaching at the University of Pittsburgh, Tufts University, Brock University, and the University of Colorado. He left the academic profession in 1969 and become a writer, broadcaster and lecturer, journalist, and critic and authority on jazz music.
Summary:
Publicity photographs of musicians and entertainers, mostly jazz musicians, such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie, but including many rock and even a few classical performers. Many prints apparently made from copy negatives (with typography, etc.) and are not original, but there are also some rarer images, such as personal snapshots. Some images concern other aspects of the music and entertainment business, including products such as instruments and electronic devices. The 2006 gift contains tape recorded radio interviews Stokes conducted between 1970 and 2003. Most of the interviewees are jazz musicians and include Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, Lionel Hampton, Artie Shaw, and Wynton Marsalis and others. Some of the interviewees are listed below. The 2007 gift consists of one cubic foot of additional interview tapes. An additional one sixth of one cubic foot of photographs was also donated by Dr. Stokes in 2007. An addition of one third of one cubic foot of additional photographs was donated by Dr. Stokes in February, 2008.
