Herman Leonard was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and served as a military photographer in Burma during World War II. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University and is best known for his photographs of jazz musicians. His 1988 premiere London photograph exhibit was entitled "Images of Jazz."
Eighty-four black-and-white silver gelatin photoprints depicting jazz musicians between 1948 and 1991. Artists include Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Lester Young, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk.
2006 addendum: twenty additional black-and-white silver gelatin images of jazz musicians, including Billie Holiday, Wynton Marsalis, Billy Strayhorn, and Lena Horne.
