Jonas Chickering founded Chickering & Sons Piano Company of Boston in April 1823. When he was 28, his partner of three years, James Stewart, left the company to the sole ownership of Chickering. In 1830, Chickering found another partner, Captain John McKay, and they turned a small, prosperous manufactory into a larger, faster, and more prosperous one. The Chickering name still stands for fine quality under the production of The Wurlitzer Company, which acquired the Chickering Company in 1985.
48 volumes of Chickering & Sons Piano Company records, correspondence from November 8, 1985 to June 30, 1987, related to the collection, all copied to 35mm microfilm. Also includes publications of the history of the company, sales literature, photographs, newspapers with articles relating to the company, advertising, and management forms and materials, 1864-1985.
