History of the Painting. In a Letter from the Artist to a Friend in New-York. Philadelphia . . . 1845. " . . . Concerning the Origin of my picture . . . I shall briefly and simply narrate the process of its invention. Accidentally taking up Bishop Porteus' Poem on Death, poetical as may be deemed his description of the Cavern of Death, . . . it struck me that a Picture thus representing death as a Monarch with his Ebony sceptre, seated on a Throne . . . would unquestionably present an appalling Scene, better in the description than on the canvas. I had seen, in Westminster Abbey, ROUBILLAC's beautiful Monumental Sculpture, representing a Noble Lady on her Couch at the close of life . . . [and] I had seen WEST's Death on a pale Horse . . . but my veneration of the Artist could not reconcile me to his personifications. . . . After finishing this Painting I commenced another of equal dimensions, . . . representing Christ's Sermon on the Mount, . . . but the difficulties attending the Exhibition of Paintings so large, induced me to abandon the undertaking; and I restricted my pencil to smaller compositions. . . ." [Pp. 1-13; excerpted from a 13-page description of the history and subject of the work. Poems by an author named "Young" are interspersed with the description, and an article from the "National Federal Gazette," Sept. 5, 1820, is also included.]
