Portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A., (painting)
Reynolds, Joshua Sir 1723-1792
Reynolds, Joshua, Sir
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 1
PAINTED BY HIMSELF. Born at Plympton, in Devonshire, July 16, 1723; died February 23, 1792, aged 69. This distinguished portrait painter has represented himself in his academic robes. We may trace in the countenance the peculiarities of his genius in modern art; the certain quickness of intellect; the searching eye, and a countenance expressive of thought. We might suppose the powers of the mind in active operation, calling to recollection and comparing the beauties of those great masters at whose shrine he offered up his adorations:--the splendour of Titian, the sweetness of Correggio, and, above all, his greatest favourite, Michael Angelo, whose name, agreeable to his wish, was the last word that escaped from his lips to the students of the Royal Academy.
