This celebrated granite column is about fifty feet high, and was transported from Constantinople. The bronze lion, which represents the arms of the city, was taken to Paris in 1797, but was afterward restored to its place. The pigeons surrounding it are traditional pets of the city, and are fed at regular intervals by persons appointed for the purpose. The view was taken from a window in the Ducal Palace. [P. 11.]
