NOTE.--Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix, a French painter, was born near Paris. From the very commencement of his career he abandoned the classic school and may be considered the founder of the romantic. He has executed an immense number of works in a wide range of subjects. His productions are distinguished by their life and energy, but his coloring is more powerful and harmonious. [P. 18; see entry 04130001 for related commentary.]
