NOTE.--Jaques Callot was born in Nancy, in Lorraine, 1593, and died in 1635. He was a descendant of a noble family, but at the age of twelve years left home without money or resources and joined a troupe of Bohemians and found his way to Florence, where he obtained the patronage of the Grand Duke Cosmo. On the death of the Prince he returned to Nancy. The fertility of his conception was wonderful, and his style remarkable varied. [P. 17; see entry 04130001 for related commentary.]
