NOTE.--Francesco Zuccarelli, an eminent landscape painter, born in Petigliano, in Tuscany, according to Lanzi, in 1702; died at Florence in 1788. For some time he applied himself to Historical painting, but his natural genius leading him to Landscape, he afterwards confined himself to that branch, in which he greatly excelled. His scenery is always pleasing and touched with great neatness and spirit. His pictures were greatly admired and extolled all over Italy. [P. 14; see entry 04130001 for related commentary.]
