Exhibition Catalogs
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 4
NOTE.--Luigi Benfatto, better known as Andrea dal Friso, a Veronese painter, born in 1551, was the nephew and scholar of Paolo Veronese, from whom he acquired an vigorous style. Ridolti says he supported the fame of the school and the splendid coloring established by Paolo for some time after the death of that great master. The same author mentions many of his works in the public places at Venice, among which is a grand composition in the church of St. Nicholas, representing the ascension of that Saint into Heaven, attended by a choir of Angels and emblematical figures. In the Chiesa di S. Marta are several pictures by him of the life of the Saint. He died in 1611. [P. 13; see entry 04130001 for related commentary.]
