"(Amer. 1756-1828.) narraganset, r.i. Pupil of Benjamin west, of the Royal Academy, London. As a painter of heads, stuart had few equals in any age or country. He was indifferent about the finish of the accessories of his portraits, subordinating everything to the head and face. Few painters could transfer the natural traits of character to canvas with the vigor and fidelity of this great painter. George Washington. 72 x 106."
